QCF Diplomas in Maritime Studies

The level 2 Diplomas in Maritime studies have been developed by the Maritime Skills Alliance (MSA). They are suitable for people who are working, or intending to work, in the Maritime sector including: merchant navy, tugs, sea fishing, inland waterways, rivers and limited distances to sea, to develop their skills and knowledge as ratings, crew members or deck hands.

Purpose and Recognition

600/2814/2/ SQA Level 2 Diploma in Maritime Studies: Marine Vessel Maintenance (QCF)

Who does this qualification suit

The Level 2 Diplomas in Maritime Studies are suitable for a wide range of learners including:

  • progression learners from basic maritime qualifications
  • employed learners who wish to enhance their career prospects
  • learners wishing to move from one sector of the maritime industry to another

Progression

These qualifications provide the opportunity to progress to further learning or more senior positions including: bosun/senior rating, (either deck or engine room) on super yachts and other vessels requiring limited certification. For those completing the Rivers, Inland Waterways and Limited distances to sea Diploma, there is an opportunity to advance to Boatmaster (Tier 1 level 2), and for those completing the Sea Fishing Diploma to become a skipper of a vessel of less than 16.5 metres in length. Learners also have the opportunity to undertake an Advanced Maritime Apprenticeship, which will apply across a range of different types of vessel controlled by international regulations, and will lead to limited certification as an Officer of the Watch either on the bridge or in the engine room, depending on the pathway followed.

How to assess

The Diplomas are designed to be assessed in the workplace, or in conditions of the workplace, for example at MCA approved Firefighting and sea survival training facilities; College mechanical engineering and electrical engineering workshops; on board an appropriate vessel.

Access

Access will be at the discretion of the Centre.

These qualifications require the learner to complete all mandatory Units within the specified Award.
