Types Of HN Developments

There are three types of HN development: the most common type is consortium developments. Then there are specialist developments, of which there are two kinds: specialist collaborative developments and specialist single-centre developments. In more detail:

  • Consortium developments are HNC and HNDs with large uptake. These will include Group Awards which were formerly referred to as nationally-devised HNC/HNDs, and frameworks where centres have agreed to merge similar Group Awards into a single development. SQA will manage the review of these qualifications in partnership with the delivering centres. All consortium-devised HNCs and HNDs should be incorporated in the SCQF by 2006.
  • Specialist collaborative developments are those specialist HNC/HNDs which are offered by a small number of centres who have agreed to take forward their revision on a collaborative basis. The small group of centres will manage the review of these qualifications supported by SQA who will validate and credit-rate all HN Units.
  • Specialist single centre developments are frameworks which are considered to be unique to local or niche markets. The centre will manage the review of these qualifications supported by SQA, who will validate and credit-rate all HN Units.

We have published the schedule for review on our website, and we report progress on a monthly basis. This schedule shows our plans for the revision of consortium developments, and also includes details of specialist collaborative developments. For specialist HNCs and HNDs devised by single centres, timescales have been agreed with individual centres.
