Planning The Writing And/Or Revision Of HN Units

SQA has agreed with colleges that from 1 April 2004, all HN Units will be validated by SQA. Centres or groups of centres proposing to develop new Units or revise existing Units should complete a DA/HN/P2 form (see SQA forms, Form 2) ideally accompanied by a Unit Outline (Centre Tool 1).

Note: SQA’s policy is to develop and validate general rather than contextualised Units.
See also Part D: Maintenance of the HN Unit Catalogue.

You will have identified the need for any new Units or revised Units through the consultation process.

The Qualification Design Team should now:

  • confirm the personnel who will write Units
  • identify and confirm the personnel involved in peer-reviewing the proposed Units
  • set milestone dates for the submission of first, second etc and final drafts
  • plan and arrange key meetings of the whole team to confirm content
  • identify key target dates for sending the Units to SQA for validation
  • identify personnel and key dates for the development of assessments
  • identify personnel and key dates for the identification of relevant teaching materials
  • ensure that all feedback received as a result of market research is taken into account at all stages in the process
