SVQ Well Services: Coiled Tubing
The Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) Level 2 in Well Services: Coiled Tubing covers the standards of performance and the knowledge and understanding required for personnel working in the oil industry well services sector.
This qualification is available through employers and other approved centres.
SVQ Level 2 Well Services: Coiled Tubing enters its lapsing period on 31 July 2015, with a finish date of 31 July 2017. Please refer to the qualification structure for further information.
Why deliver this qualification
The SVQ Level 2 in Well Services: Coiled Tubing is a nationally recognised qualification which is jointly awarded with OPITO. It incorporates the National Occupational Standards.
This qualification is supported by assessor guidelines and can be offered at any time. It does not need to follow the academic session.
Who does this qualification suit
This SVQ is aimed at individuals who are already working in the well services industry and is particularly suitable for coiled tubing operations personnel working on oilfield wellheads. It can also be useful for multi-skilled operators.
Entry is at the discretion of the centre/employer.
This is a work-based qualification so candidates should be in positions which would enable them to produce the required evidence.
An SVQ Level 2 in Well Services could open up more employment opportunities and career prospects for successful candidates.
Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval (98 KB).
How to assess
Assessment for this SVQ in Well Services qualification is mainly completed through performance in the workplace, or in workplace conditions. Simulation is permitted where it is not practical to assess a learner in a real work situation.
Evidence may be gathered by observation, product evaluation, questioning, witness testimony and personal statement.
It is important to note that there are two possible routes open to candidates for assessment:
- Cased Hole Operations
- Open Hole Operations
Where applicable, Units will cover each option. Where this is not possible, the route that the Unit must be assessed against will be identified. For example:
- the assessment of a learner rigging-up the pressure control equipment associated with well service operations is applicable only to Cased Hole Operations
- the assessment of a learner ensuring the well is safe, prior to running tools into the well, may be applicable only to operations in Open Hole Operations

SVQ Level 2 Well Services: Coiled Tubing enters its lapsing period on 31 July 2015, with a finish date of 31 July 2017.
The SVQ Level 2 in Well Services: Coiled Tubing consists of five mandatory Units and three optional Units.
- G8M3 22 - Coiled Tubing (19 KB)
This qualification is now in its lapsing period and will finish on 31.07.2017. Centres should note:
- The qualification will be deleted from the relevant catalogue
- The qualification’s content and delivery tools will remain on SQA’s website until 31.07.2017at which point they will be removed and archived
- No new centres may be approved to offer the qualification
- No candidates can be entered for the qualification
- Centres should ensure candidates complete the qualification and results are submitted to SQA before 31.07.2017
