Certificate in Principles of Sustainable Resource Management SCQF levels 5 & 6
SQA offer a wide range of relevant Waste Management qualifications all developed in association with the industry. The Certificates in Principles of Sustainable Resource Management are awarded jointly in Scotland with the Waste Management Industry Training & Advisory Board (WAMITAB). WAMITAB award waste qualifications throughout the UK.
The qualifications are available at SCQF levels 5 and 6 and they have been designed to provide the knowledge components in the Sustainable Resource Management Modern Apprenticeship. These Certificates underpin a broad range of roles in the collection, transport, treatment and final management of waste and resources, at both operator and supervisory levels.

Why deliver this qualification
These qualifications provide an entry for apprentices into the sustainable waste management industry as their first step on the employment ladder as well as persons already employed in this sector.
Although intended for use in the apprenticeship schemes the qualifications can be used on a 'stand-alone' basis where-upon they offer excellent general knowledge within sustainable waste management and resource environment.
The qualifications are assessed in a variety of ways including for example: on-the-job; formal classroom teaching and learning; tutorials and other appropriate assessment methods.
The qualifications have been designed to enable continued study to supervisory, management and professional qualifications as required by the individual and the sector.
They can be offered in any of the following modes:
- part-time (eg day-release)
- open and distance learning
- infill into existing classes
- evening provision
The qualifications provide progression opportunities into continued study and more formal professional qualifications as required by the individual and the sector.
Who does this qualification suit
The qualifications are suitable for a range of workers within sustainable resource management - from the new employee to the experienced worker wishing to progress in their career.
The qualifications are suitable for candidates who are completing the Modern Apprenticeship in Sustainable Resource Management.
The SCQF level 5 qualification will suit candidates who are working in the sustainable resource management industry and have some relevant knowledge and skills.
The SCQF level 6 qualification will suit candidates who are working in the sustainable resource management industry, who have some relevant skills and knowledge and will be hoping to progress to a team leader, supervisory or management role.
Entry is at the discretion of the centre.
No prior qualifications are required to undertake these qualifications, although experience in the waste sector would be an advantage.
These qualifications can be taken as part of a Modern Apprenticeship in Sustainable Resource Management.
These qualifications may provide progression opportunities to:
- SCQF level 7 Diploma in Waste Management Operations
- an HNC/HND in Waste or Sustainable Resource Management or related area
- degree level study at a higher education institution
employment in the Waste sector
Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.
