Construction Site Management (Construction): Highways Maintenance and Repair

The Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) level 4 in Construction Site Management (Construction): Highways Maintenance and Repair at SCQF level 9 allows learners to demonstrate competence in job related skills in their particular area of work and expertise.

This qualification covers areas such as developing and maintaining good working relationships, establishing, implementing and maintaining systems for managing health, safety and welfare, controlling project progress against agreed quality standards and programmes, planning highways maintenance or repair activities, identifying, allocating and planning the deployment and use of plant, equipment or machinery as well as organising, controlling and monitoring supplies of materials and controlling project quantities and costs.

This qualification has been designed in partnership with CITB Sector Skills Council to ensure relevance to the sector. It is also jointly awarded with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

SVQs are based on National Occupational Standards. SQA works in partnership with other organisations to ensure that National Occupational Standards (NOS) are relevant to the current and future needs of Scottish industries.

The standards provide an accurate and detailed definition of what candidates must know, understand and be able to do. The SVQ will enable those working in this sector to develop the knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in their job role.

This qualification is available through employers and training providers.

Why deliver this qualification

The SVQ in Construction Site Management (Construction): Highways Maintenance and Repair at SCQF level 9 is a re-accredited qualification.

Upon successful completion, learners will gain an internationally recognised qualification which guarantees that they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully.  Employers will also benefit from their employees being proficient.

As assessment is carried out in the workplace this minimises any time learners would need to be away from their work.

The SVQ can be offered in any of the following modes:

  • full time
  • part time (eg day release)
  • open and distance learning

Who does this qualification suit

This SVQ is suitable for:

  • individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the centre.

Candidates should be in a job or placement where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities that allow them to gather the required evidence.

No prior qualifications are required to undertake this qualification, However an SVQ 3.Construction Site Supervision (Construction): Highways Maintenance and Repair at SCQF level 7 would be advantageous.

Progression

The level 4 award could provide progression to:

  • degree level study at a higher education institution
  • employment in the construction sector, perhaps as a technician

Approval

Centres will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

  • This qualification is now in its lapsing period and will finish on 31/01/2018.  Centres should note: The qualification will be deleted from the relevant catalogue
  • The qualification’s content and delivery tools will remain on SQA’s website until 31/01/2018 at which point they will be removed and archived
  • No new centres may be approved to offer the qualification
  • No candidates can be entered for the qualification
  • Centres should ensure candidates complete the qualification and results are submitted
  • to SQA before 31/01/2018
