The Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) in Food and Drink Operations (Supply Chain Skills) at SCQF level 6 provides learners with the knowledge and skills that they will need for employment in the food and drink manufacturing sector.

It develops skills to an intermediate level and will enable individuals to be more proficient in supply chain operations — ensuring efficiency, traceability and transparency. Factors that are in the spotlight as people increasingly want to know where their food is from and how it has been produced.

This SVQ is suitable for people in job roles such as shop floor team leaders, stores team leaders, distribution staff, import/export staff, and transport and distribution staff.

The SVQ in Food and Drink Operations (Supply Chain Skills) was developed with Improve — the sector skills council for the food and drink manufacturing sector. It is available through employers and training providers.

Why deliver this qualification

The SVQ Food and Drink Operations (Supply Chain Skills) at SCQF level 6 is a new course for the growing food and drink operations sector. Breakdowns in supply chain management are thought to have led to the horse meat scandal of 2013.

The SVQ can be offered in any of the following modes:

  • part-time (eg day-release)
  • open and distance learning
  • infill into existing classes
  • evening provision

Who does this qualification suit

This SVQ is suitable for those who are working in the food and drink industry as shop floor team leaders, stores team leaders, distribution staff, import/export staff, or transport and distribution staff.

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the centre.

No prior qualifications are required to undertake this qualification, although experience in/knowledge of subject would be an advantage.

This SVQ must be assessed in the workplace, so is only suitable for those who are employed in the food industry.

Progression

The level 6 award could provide progression to:

Approval

Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.

Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.

The SVQ in Food and Drink Operations (Supply Chain Skills) at SCQF level 6 consists of consists of 3 mandatory Units and 5 optional Units.
