PDA Developing Teaching Practice in Scotlandís Colleges

Professional Development Awards (PDAs) extend or broaden professional or vocational skills and are linked to National Occupational Standards.

The PDA in Developing Teaching Practice at SCQF level 9 is for intended for college lecturers in Scotland who wish to undertake continuing professional development (CPD). It builds on the PDA Teaching Practice and is designed to develop additional skills in relation to guidance and support, assessment and quality standards. It includes:

  • planning inclusive learning opportunities and designing innovative learning and teaching materials
  • implementing college policies and procedures for guidance and support
  • devising suitable assessment strategies and producing and evaluating assessment instruments
  • complying with the principles, purposes and processes of quality assurance
  • evaluating how professional practice is influenced by applicable statutory requirements, including promoting good practice in relation to equality, social and cultural diversity

This qualification is available through colleges and the University of the Highlands and Islands. It has been designed to deliver the practical skills required of a lecturer by requiring evidence from the workplace in working with a group of learners.

Why deliver this qualification

The PDA in Developing Teaching Practice in Scotlandís Colleges at SCQF level 9 is based on the Scottish Governmentís Professional Standards for Lecturers in Scotlandís Colleges published in March 2012.† It has been developed in partnership with a wide variety of practitioners from FE colleges, College Development Network Scotland, the BRITE Initiative (Beattie Resources for Inclusiveness in Technology and Education), and HEIs.

It will help employers meet skills gaps and provide continuing professional development for staff, while candidates will gain knowledge and skills needed for progression in the workplace.

This PDA provides progression routes to further study (see Progression).

Who does this qualification suit

This qualification is for college lecturers who are working in Scotland. Candidates may have varying levels of experience and may either wish to undertake CPD to enhance the teaching skills they have already gained through the PDA Teaching Practice in Scotlandís Colleges at SCQF level 9, or they may wish to gain formal recognition of their skills in guidance and support, assessment and quality standards.

In some colleges in Scotland the achievement of this PDA is a pre-requisite for full-time employment as a lecturer.

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the centre. Candidates would normally be expected to demonstrate competence in the following:

  • Communication Skills at SCQF level 6
  • Numeracy Skills at SCQF level 4
  • Information Technology Skills at SCQF level 5
  • or similar qualifications or experience

Some knowledge and experience of learning, teaching and assessment in further education would be an advantage. Candidates should be working in a college and have a teaching timetable which provides them with the opportunity to meet the assessment criteria within each of the Units.

Progression

The Units in the PDA have been mapped against the Scottish Governmentís Professional Standards for Lecturers in Scotlandís Colleges which were published in March 2012.

Candidates could also progress onto a Teaching Qualification (FE) programme with some credit transfer being offered.

Approval

Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.

Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQAís Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQAís general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.

Centres that were previously approved to offer Teaching in Further Education G85D 18 and Teaching in Further Education an Introduction G85C 18 have been automatically approved to offer the revised PDAs.

How to assess

Each individual Unit specification gives detailed information on the Evidence Requirements and approaches to assessment for each Unit.

Assessment will focus on the necessary practical skills required of a lecturer supplemented by reflective commentaries. The reflective commentaries may be in audio, video or note format, or obtained through a professional discussion.

The PDA in Developing Teaching Practice in Scotlandís Colleges at SCQF level 9 consists of three mandatory Units amounting to 5 credits or 40 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 9.

Lapsing

The PDA Teaching in Further Education (G85D 18) has been updated in line with the March 2012 Professional Standards and finishes 31/07/17.  The new Award is the PDA Developing Teaching Practice in Scotland's Colleges (GG82 49).

Centres should note that when a Group Award is entered into its lapsing period, the following will apply:

  • the Group Award will be deleted from the relevant catalogue
  • the Group Award Arrangement document will remain until the qualification reaches its finish date at which point it will be removed form SQA website and archived
  • no new centres may be approved to offer the Group Award
  • centres should only enter candidates whom they expect to complete the Group Award during the defined lapsing period of 3 years.
