SQA offers Scientific Manufacture (Biotechnology Processing) at Level 3.
This SVQ is based on the National Occupational Standards (NOS) set and published by the Sector Skills Council for the sector, SEMTA.
The standards provide an accurate and detailed definition of what candidates must know, understand and be able to do. This SVQ will enable those working in this sector to develop the knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in their job role.
News and Announcements
This qualification is now in its lapsing period and will finish on 31/05/2018. Centres should note:
- The qualification will be deleted from the relevant catalogue
- The qualification’s content and delivery tools will remain on SQA’s website until 31/05/2018 at which point they will be removed and archived
- No new centres may be approved to offer the qualification
- No candidates can be entered for the qualification
- Centres should ensure candidates complete the qualification and results are submitted to SQA before 31/05/2018.

The SVQ in Scientific Manufacture (Biotechnology Processing) meets the employment needs of biomanufacturing staff, and the SVQ can be offered at any time and does not need to follow the academic session.
The qualification provides candidates with the knowledge and skills to enable them to develop practical skills.
Who does this qualification suit
The SVQ in Scientific Manufacture (Biotechnology Processing) is suitable for candidates working in biomanufacturing. This qualification contains Units in Maintaining Health and Safety in a Biomanufacturing Environment; Maintaining Effective and Efficient Biomanufacturing Working Relationships; and Monitoring and Following Aseptic Procedures in a Biomanufacturing Environment, which will help candidates not only within their own work environment but also for future career development.
Entry is at the discretion of the centre. The nature of the qualification is such that candidates should be in a work role or placement which allows them to demonstrate competence in practical tasks.
There are opportunities for progression to other biomanufacturing qualifications.
Centres with devolved authority are eligible to seek approval through their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact the Business Development Team for guidance in completing the combined CA1/SA1 form.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements as outlined in the guide to approval .
How to assess
Assessment is of competence demonstrated in the workplace.
Assessment is integrated with delivery and focuses on evidence of carrying out work activities.
