Operational Support in the Bus and Coach Industry
This qualification offers a flexible competence-based programme for individuals engaged in operational support in the bus and coach industries.
Learners will acquire skills and knowledge in:
- dealing with customers
- contributing to health and safety in the workplace
- delivering smooth-running bus services so that there are enough services at suitable times
- providing sufficient staff to cover services
- ensuring buses are maintained to provide safe and efficient journeys
This qualification is available through external training providers and colleges involved in delivering apprenticeships in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Why deliver this qualification
This qualification provides the flexibility which is valued by candidates and centres. The industry provides services around the clock so it is difficult for learners to commit to regular learning times. Flexibility of delivery and assessment is essential to suit learners’ work patterns.
Who does this qualification suit
This qualification is intended for employees in a passenger transport operations service, such as customer service assistants, controllers, passenger services supervisors and transport planners. It is suitable for learners aged 16 years and over.
Entry is at the discretion of the centre. Learners should be 16 years of age and over and in a job role which enables them to meet the standards.
Learners may progress to an apprenticeship programme or to professional qualifications in the transport training industry.
There is also the possibility of progressing to assistant managerial and managerial roles within the sector.
Centres seeking approval to offer this qualification should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.
How to assess
Evidence of occupational competence should be generated and collected through performance under workplace conditions. Simulation may be used in some circumstances. Refer to the individual Unit specifications

NVQ Certificate in Operational Support in the Bus and Coach Industry at QCF level 2 consists of three mandatory Units (11 QCF credit points) and 18 QCF credit points from a selection of 16 optional Units.
