The NVQ Certificate in Footwear and Leather at QCF level 2 will develop knowledge and skills that are relevant to leather processing, footwear manufacturing and the leather goods supply chain.

It is suitable for candidates working as cutters, machinists, saddlemakers, last makers, last cutters and pattern cutters, and for those who wish to specialise in fellmongery and tanning for the manufacture and repair of leather goods and garments.

It is also relevant for candidates working in production and quality control, product development and in retail outlets.

This qualification is available through colleges and training providers.

This qualification offers centres flexibility and choice because of the comprehensive range of optional Units.

This NVQ Certificate in Footwear and Leather at QCF level 2 can be offered in any of the following modes:

  • full-time
  • part-time (eg day-release)
  • open and distance learning
  • infill into existing classes
  • evening provision

Who does this qualification suit

The NVQ Certificate in Footwear and Leather at QCF level 2 is suitable for
a wide range of learners, including:

  • school leavers
  • adult returners to education
  • people in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects
  • individuals who wish to start their own business


This Certificate is a mandatory component in the Intermediate Level Fashion and Textiles Apprenticeship


As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre.


This qualification allows candidates to gain technical knowledge and practical experience, along with functional and personal skills, required for their immediate job and future career in the footwear and leather industry.


Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.

Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.

How to assess

Ongoing course assessment will apply. Each Unit specification gives detailed information on the Evidence Requirements and approaches to assessment for the Unit.

This qualification requires the learner to complete mandatory and optional Units.

Certificate in Footwear and Leather at QCF level 2 consists of 8 mandatory Units (8 QCF credit points) and 10 optional Units (10 QCF credit points).
