Kyle Cairns - East Lothian
A qualification designed to help young people find work has led to a first job for an East Lothian teenager.
Kyle Cairns, of Port Seton, completed the Certificate of Work Readiness through Cannongate Youth. The training provider worked with Kyle to build his confidence, helped him with employability skills such as CV preparation and team working. Cannongate Youth then arranged work experience at the Novotel, Edinburgh Park.
The award, developed by Skills Development Scotland, aims to help young people prove to employers that they are ready for work. It includes 190 hours work experience, time with a training provider and work on employability skills. The qualification is only awarded following a final assessment by the employer at the end of the placement.
Kyle showed tremendous commitment to his work placement, despite facing a lengthy commute from his home.
Novotel maintenance manager David Hacking said 16 year old Kyle had been with them for three months.
“He showed a lot of initiative from the outset and we were delighted to be able to offer him a job. It has worked out well for him and for us. We would be happy to give more young people the opportunity of work experience thanks to our experience with Kyle,” said David.
