Diploma in Technical Theatre Operations at SCQF level 6
The Diploma in Technical Theatre Operations at SCQF level 6 provides learners with a qualification that demonstrates both underpinning knowledge and performance evidence of competence, which they can use to seek employment or to progress to further study.
It covers areas such as technical and production developments, effective working relationships, and health and safety related to stage, sound or lighting.
This qualification is available through employers and training providers.

The Diploma in Technical Theatre Operation at SCQF level 6 is specifically designed for the growing theatre sector.
Supported by the Scottish Government, this competence-based qualification is part of the Modern Apprenticeships frameworks.
This qualification is based on the most recent National Occupational Standards, defined by Creative and Cultural Skills the Sector Skills Council (SSC).
Candidates can progress to a range of courses at a higher level including the Higher National Certificate in Technical Theatre at SCQF level 7.
The Diploma can be offered within a workplace environment. It can also be assessed within a workplace environment or, where simulation is used, within a realistic working environment.
Who does this qualification suit
This Diploma is suitable for:
- those interested in technical theatre operations
- learners who may have just left school
- mature candidates who may have been out of education for some time
- individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification
- people who wish to start their own business
- employers who wish their employees to obtain short, continuing professional development courses
The level 6 award could provide progression to:
- an HNC in Technical Theatre or a related area
- degree level study at a higher education institution
- employment in the theatre sector, perhaps in management or operations
Entry is at the discretion of the centre.
No prior qualifications are required to undertake this qualification, although experience in/knowledge of subject would be an advantage.
Centres interested in offering this qualification should come forward for approval and contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide. The specific delivery requirements are set out in the Assessment Strategy.
How to assess
Assessment of this award will be through a series of practical assessments or tasks. Some assessments will be carried out under supervised open-book conditions, others under supervised closed-book conditions.
