Diploma in Maritime Studies: Marinas and Boatyards at QCF level 2

The Diploma in Maritime Studies: Marinas and Boatyards at QCF level 2 is designed with a mix of learning outcomes, some relating to underpinning knowledge and others to competence. 

It will provide learners with a common core of learning, with additional options to suit the different circumstances of those working in coastal or inland marinas, or in boatyards. Learners can specialise in lifting and moving boats and yachts, mooring and berthing boats and yachts, moving loads in boatyards, and maintaining marinas and boatyard equipment.

This qualification is available through employers, colleges and training providers.

Why deliver this qualification

This qualification offers centres flexibility and choice because of the comprehensive range of optional Units.                                                                               

Successful learners will be able to progress to the Intermediate Marina Manager programme offered by the British Marine Federation.

This Diploma at QCF level 2 can be offered in any of the following modes:

  • full-time
  • part-time (eg day-release)

 

Who does this qualification suit

The Diploma in Maritime Studies at QCF level 2 is suitable for a wide range of candidates including:

  •  people in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects, particularly those working as marina or boatyard operatives 

Progression

Learners will be able to progress to the Intermediate Marina Manager programme offered by the British Marine Federation.

Learners can progress to job roles such as marina operative, boatyard operative and inland marina operative, which may involve duties such as assisting with the movement of boats, preparing boats for lifting and storage, maintaining security/health and safety in the marina, providing a fuel and pump-out facility, general maintenance, and customer service. 

 

Approval

The approval of this qualification is not devolved to centres.

Interested centres should contact SQA’s Business Development Team if they wish to become approved for this qualification.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.

Ongoing course assessment will apply. Each Unit specification gives detailed information on the Evidence Requirements and approaches to assessment for the Unit.

Apprenticeships

The Diploma is included as a pathway for marina and boatyard operatives within the Maritime Occupations Apprenticeship.

Qualification Structure

This qualification requires the learner to complete mandatory and optional Units.

Diploma in Maritime Studies: Marinas and Boatyards at QCF level 2 consists of 10 mandatory Units (36 QCF credit points) and five optional Units (at least 23 QCF credit points).
