The Diploma in Jewellery Allied Trades at QCF level 4 advances the knowledge and skills needed to work in the jewellery manufacturing industry as a designer, jobbing jeweller, goldsmith or trade specialist (eg setter, engraver, enameller, or polisher and finisher).

Candidates can specialise in several different areas of Jewellery Manufacturing:

The Diploma in Jewellery Allied Trades at QCF level 4 covers a variety of areas such as preparing and maintaining the general workshop environment for the manufacture of precious metal objects; producing enamelled/engraved surfaces for precious metal objects using advanced techniques; and implementing repairs and restoration on polished and finished/set items.

Achievement of the Diploma means that the learner has demonstrated that they have reached a QCF level 4 standard where they can work independently, with confidence and consistency.

This qualification is designed to be assessed in the workplace, or in conditions of the workplace. It is available through approved SQA centres.

Why deliver this qualification

Learners can progress to a range of courses at a higher level allowing centres to retain or build student numbers (see Progression).

This Diploma at QCF level 4 offers flexibility because it can be delivered in any of the following modes:

  • full-time
  • part-time (eg day-release)
  • evening provision

Who does this qualification suit

The Diploma in Jewellery Allied Trades at QCF level 4 is suitable for a wide range of candidates, aged 16 and over, including:

  • those progressing from the Diploma in Jewellery Manufacturing Allied Trades at QCF level 3
  • adult returners to education
  • people in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects
  • individuals who wish to start their own business

Apprenticeships

This Diploma is a mandatory component in the Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship in Jewellery Manufacturing, Silversmithing, and Allied Trades.

Candidates may wish to do this qualification as part of the Apprenticeship, or on its own.   If candidates complete this qualification as part of the Apprenticeship they will be required to undergo additional training, over and above the core qualification, in areas including employment rights and responsibility and/or English and maths.

They may wish to consider taking this qualification outside of the Apprenticeship framework:

  • to maximise their employment opportunities within this sector, as not all employers offer Apprenticeship places for this particular job role
  • the full Apprenticeship may not be relevant to those who are already in employment but wish to gain recognition and/or certification of their skills
  • if they meet the entry requirements to take the qualification but not those required for the apprenticeship route

Access

As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre.

Progression

This qualification can enable candidates to progress to a range of job roles, including:

  • Senior Engraver which can involve hand engraving, decorative, lettering or seal work on jewellery or silverware.
  • Senior Gem Setter  which can involve a range of hand or machine setting techniques predominantly on jewellery though may be on silverware.
  • Senior Polisher/Finisher which can involve polishes and finishes on a wide range of items and can cover both jewellery and silverware. It can also include plated finishes in a variety of metals
  • Senior Enameller which can involve the vitreous enamelling of jewellery, silversmithing and objet d'art

Successful completion of the Jewellery Allied Trades at QCF level 4 can allow learners to progress further education such as::

  • Diploma in Jewellery Manufacturing CAD/CAM QCF level 4
  • Diploma in Jewellery and Silverware Manufacturing QCF level
  • Degrees in jewellery, silversmithing or associated areas like design
  • Foundation degrees in art and design

Approval

Centres will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.

Ongoing course assessment will apply. Each Unit specification gives detailed information on the Evidence Requirements and approaches to assessment for the Unit.

The Diploma in Jewellery and Allied Trades: Enamelling at QCF level 4 consists of three mandatory Units and four optional Units. To attain the qualification, learners must achieve a total of 65 credits.
