The Level 4 Award in Maritime Studies: Tug Master less than 500 gross tonnage at QCF level 4 will develop knowledge and skills in areas such as direct tug operations and manoeuvring a tug.
This qualification is supported by the Maritime Skills Alliance and is available through SQA-approved centres.

- part-time (eg day-release)
Who does this qualification suit
This qualification is suitable for a wide range of candidates including:
- people in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects
- employed learners wishing to move from one sector of the maritime industry to another
As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre.
This qualification will be taken by individuals who have been certificated as competent officers of the watch and who want to become qualified as masters of tug vessels.
Masters of tugs normally carry out the following functions:
- navigation at the management level
- controlling the operation of the ship
- care for persons on board at the operational level
- radio communications
The approval of this qualification is not devolved to centres.
Interested centres should contact SQA’s Business Development Team if they wish to become approved for this qualification.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.
