Certificate in Theatre Support: Costume and Wardrobe Level 2

The Certificate in Theatre Support: Costume and Wardrobe at QCF level 2 will develop knowledge and skills in areas such as patterns, fittings, materials, dressing and health and safety.

This qualification includes giving customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation; contributing to good working relationships; cleaning up your own work area; and keeping up to date with technical and production developments in the live arts.

This qualification is available through approved centres.

This qualification offers centres flexibility and choice because of the comprehensive range of optional Units.

Learners can progress to a range of courses at a higher level including the Diploma in Live Events and Promotion at level 3, allowing centres to retain or build student numbers.

This Certificate in Theatre Support: Costume and Wardrobe at QCF level 2 can be offered in any of the following modes:

  • full-time
  • part-time (eg day-release)
  • open and distance learning
  • infill into existing classes
  • evening provision

Who does this qualification suit

This qualification is suitable for a wide range of candidates including:

  • school leavers
  • adult returners to education
  • people in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects
  • individuals who wish to start their own business


This Certificate in Theatre Support: Costume and Wardrobe at QCF level 2 is included as a component in the Level 2 Costume and Wardrobe Apprenticeship framework.


As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre.


Learners who have achieved the Certificate can progress to job roles relating to their chosen pathways.

  • Costume/Wardrobe Assistant: with responsibilities such as supporting assembling, making and altering clothes for actors and assisting them to dress; helping cutters; searching for hired costumes and accessories; helping with cleaning, washing and ironing of costumes; and keeping records of accessories.

They can also do further qualifications to build on their skills, such as a level 3 Diploma in Live Events and Promotions, or a Foundation degree, HNC/D or a degree.


Centres will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQAs Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQAs general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.

Ongoing course assessment will apply. Each Unit specification gives information on the Evidence Requirements and approaches to assessment for the Unit.

The Certificate in Theatre Operations: Costume and Wardrobe at QCF level 3 requires the learner to achieve a minimum total of 23 credits by completing the 5 Mandatory Units in Group A (15 credits) plus a minimum of 8 Optional credits from Group B.
