SQA across the globe
This year, our international centre events took place in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 16 and 17 March and in Abu Dhabi on 18 May.
These events gave centres the opportunity to meet with and hear from their SQA colleagues, including their International Regional Manager, quality assurance staff and our Head of International. Delegates also met with SQA’s Chief Executive and our Director of Business Development.
The main focus of the events was quality assurance with interactive workshops, one-to-one sessions with SQA staff, and networking opportunities with fellow delegates.
SQA is currently working with a number of employers and training establishments across the Gulf to deliver either SQA qualifications or to develop Customised Awards.
- There has been an increased interest in credit-rated Customised Awards as centres appreciate the benefits to their students of international recognition for their programmes.
- Two large colleges in the region offer a range of HNCs and HNDs. One has an articulation arrangement with a Scottish university.
We are constantly raising awareness of our qualifications and services in the region and staff have attended trade shows over the last 12 months such as ‘Get Energy’.
We also hosted an event for our centres in Abu Dhabi in May which covered topics from writing assessment instruments to how to prepare for systems verification.
SQA is pleased to be supporting countries within emerging markets to develop their education provision.
As part of this work we have a number of approved centres in Myanmar which are helping to develop pathways through the delivery of HNDs. SQA HND students from SQA’s first Myanmar centre, KMD Computer Group, graduated with HND Computing: Software Development and progressed onto the final year of an honours degree with a UK university.
SQA has 33 approved centres delivering 14 HNDs in China and has certificated over 30,000 students since the programme started in 2003.
Our priority in China is working with centres to enhance quality and ensure that students are well prepared for progressing into work or university. In support of this we now host three continuing professional development conferences annually in China with an extensive programme of workshops.
Over the last 12 months we have continued to raise awareness of SQA’s products and services within the Americas region. With a new delivery centre in Boston offering Oil and Gas SVQs and centres coming on board from Canada there is increasing interest in SQA throughout North America.
Our highlight of the year was presenting certificates to our first American HNC graduates in Michigan.
