Dr Gill Stewart presents the team from West College Scotland with their Essential Skills award.

Excellence in teaching and learning within Scotland’s colleges was celebrated at the College Development Network (CDN) Annual Awards.

SQA is proud to support the event and sponsored the Essential Skills Award category, which recognises innovative ways that colleges help students to not only gain relevant skills but also assist them in recognising and demonstrating their abilities.

The winner was West College Scotland, whose web-based application allows students to reflect, in real time, on the skills they have gained. This helps the college track the progress of individual learners, who will be better able to articulate their skills to future employers.

Borders College was Highly Commended for working with industry and the local community to engage vulnerable and economically disadvantaged young people in the promotion of STEM subjects.

Forth Valley College was Commended for their Construction and Core Skills lecturers increasing learner engagement through a project focusing on the practicalities of creating a domestic wind turbine.

Dr Gill Stewart, SQA’s Director of Qualifications Development, said: ‘We are delighted to be sponsoring the Essential Skills Award and I’d like to congratulate the finalists, whose staff have shown admirable commitment to skills development amongst their learners. I extend particular congratulations to our category winner, West College Scotland.’

A massive well done to our finalists from SQA! Information on all the finalists can be found on the CDN website.
