Subjects & Qualifications

Citzenship/Naturalisation

The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) is managing a project on behalf of the Home Office and the Scottish Government to adapt and pilot ESOL Citizenship learning materials for use in Scotland. In April 2004 the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) and LLU+ were commissioned by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and the Home Office to develop ESOL Citizenship learning for use in England and Wales. SQA was awarded a grant from the Home Office to adapt and then pilot the materials for use in Scotland.

A contextualized set of learning materials was completed at the end of November 2005. The materials will be piloted in five Scottish centres between January and June 2006. The learning materials have been designed for learners working towards SCQF levels 2-5 utilising the new National Qualifications in ESOL. The 12 topics in the pack are based on the six broad areas that were recommended in ‘The New and the Old’ report from the advisory board chaired by Sir Bernard Crick.

Aims

To develop and pilot the Citizenship materials for ESOL Learners pack with five ESOL providers in Scotland from the Further Education and community sectors.

Regulation Changes

On the 7th April 2010, the UK Border Agency implemented changes to the requirements for those applying for indefinite leave to remain or British Citizenship. The changes affect those who wish to satisfy the requirement to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the English Language and of life in the UK by obtaining an ESOL qualification.
