Web Browser Security Settings
Before downloading a program from a Web site, you should always ensure that it is coming from a reliable source and block programs from sources you do not trust. Internet Explorer can check that the program has a valid certificate and that the software publisher's identity matches the certificate. Internet Explorer divides the Internet into four zones, shown in the following table:
|Internet||This zone contains anything not in any other zone. The default security setting is Medium. Sites cannot be added to this zone.|
|Local Intranet||This zone contains sites that don't require a proxy server, ie: local intranet sites or network paths. The default security setting is Medium-Low and Internet Explorer allows cookies to be saved. Sites can be added to this zone.|
|Trusted Sites||This zone contains sites that you can trust. The default security setting for this zone is Low, and Internet Explorer allows cookies to be saved. Sites can be added to this zone.|
|Restricted Sites||This zone contains sites that you don't trust. The default security setting for this zone is High, and Internet Explorer will block all cookies. Sites can be added to this zone.|
This allows you to assign web sites to a zone with a suitable security level, eg: you might want to set the security settings for your Local Intranet zone to low, but place sites outside your corporate in the Restricted Zone with a much higher security setting. The zone you are currently in is displayed on the status bar in the lower-right corner of the Internet Explorer screen.
You can add or remove a web site from a security zone and change the security level of a zone. From the Security tab of the Internet Options dialog box which can be opened from the Tools menu in Internet Explorer.
A record of the actions you have taken to configure web browser security settings can contribute towards your logbook for this unit.
You have now reached the end of this section, which is also the end of the unit. You can return to any topic in this section by using the menu at the left-hand side of the screen.
