Types of Scanner

There are different types of scanner available but generally the two types that you will come across in your role as first line support are:

  • Flatbed
  • Handheld

The flatbed scanner is the most popular because of the high quality of its scans and its ease of use. Flatbed scanners operate in a similar way to photocopiers, in that the lid is lifted and the item to be scanned is placed on a glass plate. The image is scanned using a laser that moves from the top to the bottom of the document and captures the subsequent reflection.

A common size of flatbed scanner is A4.

Handheld scanners are more portable than flatbed and different sizes of document can be scanned more readily than flatbed scanners.
