Packets vs Datagrams

TCP = Packet
UDP = Datagram


It may seem that these two terms can be used interchangeably to describe the way data is encapsulated to be sent over a network. However, in its strictest sense, the word packet should only be used when the communication is reliable, e.g. IP over TCP. A datagram is used when the communication is unreliable, e.g. IP over UDP.
