IPv6 Addresses

IP (Version 6) Addresses comprise of 128-bits.

IPv6 addresses are usually written down as eight groups of four hexadecimal values separated by colons:

XXXX : XXXX : XXXX : XXXX : XXXX : XXXX : XXXX : XXXX

The address range of IPv6 is designed to overcome the shortages that were so problematic with IPv4.

0000 : 0000 : 0000 : 0000 : 0000 : 0000 : 0000 : 0000

To

FFFF : FFFF : FFFF : FFFF : FFFF : FFFF : FFFF : FFFF

An example IPv6 address could be:

003A : 11AC : 1010 : 941B : CC09 : 0087 : 4323 : 10FF

Note: The loopback address for IPv6 can either be 0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1 or ::1.
