Legislation

Much of the legislation concerning computer systems is generated from country to country and as such will vary slightly from place to place. However, the basic content will often be similar. In European countries there are EU directives, which dictate legislation to be carried out in EU countries. These EU directives are often incorporated into the legislation applied in each country. For example, many of the EU directives in Britain are applied as part of the Health and Safety at Work Act.

It should be noted that the health and safety legislation is applied to protect people and to ensure their welfare. Much of the content of the legislation could be described as 'common sense' and would be good working practice even without being a legal requirement. Even if you were not bound by the legislation it is good practice to follow the guidelines to ensure the safety of yourself and others.
