Health and Safety Issues When Using Computers

There are important health and safety issues when using computer systems. Much legislation covers this area, providing guidance and direction for the safe use of computer system hardware. The most relevant regulations you will encounter are the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992, Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, and The Fire Precautions (Workplace) (Amendment) Regulations 1999 - as well as the general guidelines in the Heath and Safety at Work Act 1974.

There are two areas we are interested in:

  • Locating and setting up a computer system;
  • Using and operating a computer system.

We must ensure that a computer system is located in a suitable place and is then commissioned and set up correctly. We must then ensure that the people who use the computer system are at minimum risk of disease or injury.
