HNC Professional Stage DanceThe HNC Professional Stage Dance will equip you with the knowledge and skills professional stage dance performers need to succeed in a number of areas within the modern performance industry.

The HNC will develop your choreographic, communication, interpersonal, presentation skills, as well as professional attitudes which will enhance your employment prospects.

It will also develop your self-evaluation, interpersonal and analytical skills and other soft skills.

You will develop an awareness of creative processes that enables you to evolve a visual language and to enhance your problem solving and communication skills. The HNC 3D Computer Animation also connects with the National Occupational Standards, which provide you with organisational and research skills to supplement essential software skills.

Employment and progression opportunities

The award will equip you with the skills to gain employment in a variety of areas. Having studied these Group Awards you will gain the knowledge and skills enabling you to pursue a career in dance areas such as: commercial dance, cabaret, musicals, and music videos.

On completion you may be able to progress onto the HND Professional Stage Dance or a suitable degree course. You should consult with your centre about the requirements of whichever course you choose to progress to.


As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre. Examples of formal entry qualifications include:

  • Relevant Units from an appropriate SQA NQ programme, eg Higher Dance: Classical, Higher Dance: Jazz, Higher Dance: Contemporary, Higher Dance: Alternative, Higher Dance: Choreography
  • Higher Dance Practice
  • Relevant industry experience
  • Evidence of appropriate practical skills at audition
  • Two Highers in any subject

Formal academic achievements will not be enough for entry. You may be asked to undergo an appraisal, which would normally include a formal audition, in which you will participate in a one hour ballet class, one hour jazz class, perform a prepared song and an interview.

If you have suitable work experience, you may be accepted for entry provided the centre believes you are likely to benefit from the course.
