SVQ Team Leading

The Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) 2 in Team Leading at SCQF level 5 offers candidates the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge they need to do their job competently. This qualification has been specially designed for team leaders, to give them the knowledge and skills to improve team relationships and hone their own leadership skills. The SVQ in Team Leading is based on the National Occupational Standards for management and leadership.

Why deliver this qualification
The SVQ in Team Leading will meet the employment needs of managers who are in their first managerial role and/or have a limited area of control.
As an SVQ, this qualification is nationally-recognised. It offers candidates an opportunity to achieve a work-based qualification in their place of work during normal working hours. Centres will be able to select relevant optional Units to suit the individual candidate’s work role.
Who does this qualification suit
The SVQ 2 in Team Leading at SCQF level 5 is aimed at managers in their first management role with a tightly defined area of responsibility.
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the centre. As this is a work-based qualification, candidates must be in posts which will enable them to provide the required evidence.
Candidates would be expected to have a limited area of control and a tightly defined area of responsibility.
Progression
Candidates could progress to higher level SVQs in Management or to HNC/Diploma/PDA Management qualifications
Approval
Centres with devolved authority are eligible to seek approval through their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact the Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements as outlined in the guide to approval.
How to assess
Assessment is through performance in the workplace and simulation is not allowed. Evidence may be classified into three categories: work produced by the candidate as part of his/her job as a manager; work produced by others relating to the work that the candidate does as a manager; and statements produced by others about what the candidate has done.
This evidence may be gathered by observed performance, products of work, witness testimony and personal statement, and presented as a portfolio of candidate work.

Structure of SVQ in Team Leading
The SVQ in Team Leading consists of six Units, four mandatory Units and two optional Units.

Any Other Information
For candidates where English is not their first language it is recommended that they possess English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL) level 5 or a score of 5.5 in IELTS. Jointly awarded by SQA and Chartered Management Institute (CMI).
