SVQ 2 Controlling Lifting Operations: Slinger/Signaller (Construction) at SCQF level 5

The Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ 2) in Controlling Lifting Operations: Slinger/Signaller (Construction) at SCQF level 5 allows learners to demonstrate competence in job-related skills in their particular area of work and expertise.
This qualification covers areas such as slinging and signalling the movement of suspended loads; conforming to general workplace health, safety and welfare; and conforming to productive work practices.
SVQs are based on National Occupational Standards (NOS). SQA works in partnership with other organisations to ensure that NOS are relevant to the current and future needs of Scottish industries. CITB is the industry training board for the construction industry.

Why deliver this qualification
Learners will gain an internationally recognised qualification which guarantees that they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully. Employers will also benefit from their employees being proficient.
As assessment is carried out in the workplace this minimises any time learners would need to be away from their work.
Learners can progress to a range of qualifications including Controlling Lifting Operations (Construction): Supervising Lifts or Controlling Lifting Operations (Construction): Planning Lifts.
The SVQ can be offered in any of the following modes:
- full-time
- part-time (eg day-release)
- open and distance learning
Who does this qualification suit
This SVQ is suitable for:
- learners who may have just left school
- individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification
- employees who wish to obtain short, continuing professional development courses
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the centre.
Candidates should be in a job or placement where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow then to gather the required evidence.
No prior qualifications or knowledge are required to undertake this qualification.
Progression
This SVQ 2 could provide progression to:
- an SVQ in Controlling Lifting Operations at SCQF levels 3 or 4
- employment in the construction sector, perhaps as a slinger/signaller
Approval
Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority require to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.
