The Level 2 Award in Putting Playwork Principles into Practice will develop knowledge and skills relating to the role of a playwork assistant in areas such as:

  • The importance of play — which provides learners with an introduction to the importance of play for children and young people.
  • Playwork skills and attitudes — where learners will develop an understanding of the attitudes required by playworkers towards children and young people.
  • Intervention and playwork practice — where learners will develop an understanding of the importance/impact of interaction within a playwork setting and of reflecting on their own relationships with children and young people.

This qualification is available through SQA approved centres in Wales.

Qualification rationale and objectives

Rationale

The Level 2 Award is an entry level qualification for the playwork environment. It is designed to develop introductory knowledge and skills in the playwork sector and is aimed at learners who may already be working within a playwork setting but who are looking for formal qualifications and experience in the sector.

Learners can also build on the skills and knowledge gained from achieving this qualification by progressing on to the Level 2 Certificate in Putting Playwork Principles into Practice or by gaining employment at an assistant level within the playwork sector.

It is intended that the qualification will allow learners to develop experience of recognised playwork practice and principles and the associated industrial practices. The Award will provide a sound basis for working and advancing in the playwork sector.

Objectives

The qualification is designed to lead the learner to one or more of the following objectives:

  • to develop understanding and basic skills in the area of playwork
  • to receive a broad education in playwork

Purpose of this qualification

The primary purpose of this qualification is to develop occupational competence as a playworker. As a competence-based qualification achievement will provide the underpinning knowledge and skills required to meet the recognised standard to carry out the role of a playworker at an assistant level.

What does this qualification cover

As this is a competence-based qualification, learners will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills required by the sector through on-the-job training.

To achieve the Level 2 Award in Putting Playwork Principles into Practice, learners need a minimum total of nine credits by completing all three mandatory units.

Recognition, progression and further information

Who does this qualification suit

Entry to the qualification is at the discretion of the centre.

This qualification is for assistant playworkers and childcare staff and it facilitates progression to the Level 2 Certificate in Putting Playwork Principles into Practice, other relevant qualifications at Level 2, or into employment as an assistant playworker.

Learners should be in a job or placement where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow them to gather the required evidence.

This qualification is mainly taken by individuals employed as:

  • entry level/assistant playworkers
  • sessional workers within a playwork environment

Apprenticeships

This qualification is not part of an apprenticeship.

Progression

Learners may progress from this qualification onto the Level 2 Certificate in Putting Playwork Principles into Practice.

What approvals are needed

Centres interested in offering this qualification require to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide. The specific delivery requirements are set out in the assessment strategy.

How to assess

Ongoing course assessment will apply. Each unit specification gives detailed information on the evidence requirements/assessment criteria and approaches to assessment for the unit. Training manuals relating to this qualification are also available from PlayWales.

Assessment strategy/Principle

The Level 2 Award in Putting Playwork Principles into Practice can be assessed by a variety of assessment methods including:

  • a reflective diary relating to playwork principles
  • current personal experience in a playwork setting
  • the play environment
  • play cues and returns
  • loose parts
  • how to assess and manage risk
  • an observation of children and young peoples’ play
  • a scenario which describes an off-site trip with extended response questions covering: health and safety; ratios of adults to children and young people; planning, policy and processes; and team working

The learner’s assessment will be carried out through ongoing work shown by entries in their reflective diary (including personal experience) and by extended response questions.
