NC Stage Crafts: An Introduction to Costume, Design and Props

NC Stage Crafts: An Introduction to Costume, Design and Props

National Certificates (NCs) are practical qualifications designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills (including Core Skills) required for further study or to gain employment.

The NC in Stage Crafts: An Introduction to Costume, Design and Props at SCQF level 6 introduces learners to a range of creative skills and disciplines commonly used in production departments for theatrical and creative installations.

The qualification covers areas such as an introduction to industrial machine sewing skills, art design 3D skills development, art and design research and investigation skills, creating costume for performance, theatrical design and art and design model making.

The qualification also provides many transferable skills in communication, compilation, design and innovative development of original ideas which will allow learners to build on the skills and knowledge gained from achievement of this qualification when working towards achieving another higher level qualification for example, HNC Costume for Stage and Screen or HNC Technical Theatre.

National Certificates are designed for full-time delivery over one year (or part-time over two years) and are available in colleges.

Why deliver this qualification

NCs bridge the progression gap from school attainment to HN and other study. They are suitable for school leavers and those seeking a route back into study at non-advanced level. They are trusted qualifications having been developed by practitioners with the support of the sector skills councils.

The NC in Stage Crafts: An Introduction to Costume, Design and Props at SCQF level 6 can be offered in any of the following modes:

  • full-time
  • part-time (eg day-release)
  • January start, ‘Access to HN Course’

It is not anticipated that learners will have the required skills to lead directly to creative professional employment. However, it could lead to employment in related industries e.g. Costume Hire and Costume retail outlets, property hire.

National Certificates include opportunities for learners to develop Core Skills.
