Scottish Government announces appointment of new SQA Chair

David MiddletonThe Scottish Government has announced the appointment of David Middleton as the new chair of the SQA Board.  Mr Middleton, former chief executive of Transport Scotland, will take up his new position from 01 September. He replaces Mr Graham Houston, who has served as SQA’s chair since 2009 and has now completed his second term of office.

Mr Middleton has a wide range of experience working with stakeholders across the public and private sectors, including senior positions in local government and agriculture. He was Head of the Scotland Office from 2007 to 2009 and, more recently, from 2009 to 2015 he was Chief Executive of Transport Scotland. He was awarded the CBE for services to transport in Scotland in January 2015.

SQA Chief Executive Dr Janet Brown said: “I look forward to working with Mr Middleton and welcoming him to SQA. I’d also thank Mr Houston for his contribution to SQA and wish him well for the future.”

Mr Middleton said: "I very much look forward to joining the SQA Board as Chair and supporting SQA to deliver its important contribution to life in Scotland."

Mr Middleton’s appointment will be for four years and will run from 1 September 2017 to 31 August 2021.
