What is SOLAR?

SOLAR Project Banner

SOLAR is an online assessment tool that provides summative and formative e-assessments. It’s based on banks of quality-assured question items. These e-assessments cover qualifications at all levels from SCQF level 2 to level 8.

The summative e-assessments are pre-verified — so centres know that quality is assured and scores achieved are correct. No post-delivery verification of assessments is required. This provides real benefits for both learners and learning providers. A full list of available assessments can be accessed at www.sqasolar.org.uk.

Formative e-assessments are available to support many subjects, such as:

The formative e-assessments are quality assured, and provide detailed feedback for learners. Learners can access the assessments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week using a browser and our Open Assess portal www.sqasolar.org.uk/openassess

Each delivery of an e-assessment to a learner is dynamically generated by the system, based on pre-specified rules. We are also developing a range of web-enabled teaching and learning materials to complement these e-assessments and these will be available later in 2011.

You can find more information about SOLAR e-assessments at www.sqasolar.org.uk, or contact us.

Survey: Remote delivery of assessment

SQA would like to better understand your experiences and expectations of delivering assessments remotely, and to improve the guidance available to schools, colleges, training providers and other centres. Please take our survey to help shape our approach.

We would like to hear from you whether you have been assessing learners remotely or not, and if you are delivering qualifications from SQA or from other awarding bodies – engagement with the survey will ensure your voice is included when considering future approaches. The survey will feed into a wider project involving more detailed discussions with groups of education practitioners and case-studies of remote assessment approaches used in SQA centres.

This survey is for centres and practitioners and should take around five minutes to complete. All feedback is welcome and please be assured that all responses are anonymous unless answering on behalf of an institution or organisation.
