SQA Advanced Certificate in Contracting Management

The SQA Advanced Certificate in Contracting Management develops skills and knowledge relevant to the contracting sector of the construction industry.

Throughout the course, learners develop project-management skills and competence in the legal procedures that the construction industry must adhere to. They are introduced to corporate strategy and gain an understanding of the cash-flow implications when negotiating contacts.

Learners also gain vocational skills including study, research, planning, developing, evaluating and organisational skills.

This qualification is available through a growing number of colleges, training providers and universities around the world. Typically, an SQA Advanced Certificate takes one year to complete.

The unit-based structure supports flexible delivery. A unit is typically 40 hours of timetabled learning.

  • school leavers
  • adult returners to education
  • learners in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects

Access

As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre. Examples of formal entry qualifications include:

  • any relevant National Certificate Group Award at SCQF level 5 or 6
  • any two Highers, together with three National 5 passes
  • an SVQ 3 in a relevant area
  • different combinations of relevant and equivalent qualifications from other awarding bodies

Progression

The SQA Advanced Certificate in Contracting Management is particularly suited to learners who are interested in jobs such as contracts manager, facilities manager, project manager, and estimator.

Learners who achieve the SQA Advanced Certificate in Contracting Management followed by a post-graduate qualification can apply for membership of the Chartered Management Institute. 

Offer this qualification

Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.

Centres without devolved authority must come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.
