SQA Advanced Certificate/Diploma in Mechatronics

SQA Advanced Certificate/Diploma in Mechatronics

The SQA Advanced Certificate and SQA Advanced Diploma in Mechatronics cover the core principles and technologies that underpin mechatronics. Learners develop the sound practical, construction, investigation, testing and project skills which are critical to mechatronics technicians and incorporated engineers. They also gain skills in analysis and synthesis, study, evaluation, research, and planning. These qualifications develop learners’ knowledge and understanding of electronics, electrical engineering, computer technology, control engineering, and mechanical engineering.

The SQA Advanced Certificate and SQA Advanced Diploma in Mechatronics are available through a growing number of colleges and universities around the world. Typically, an SQA Advanced Certificate takes one year to complete and an SQA Advanced Diploma takes two years.

Why deliver this qualification

SQA Advanced Certificates and Diplomas have been developed by SQA in partnership with colleges, universities and industry — so employers recognise that they provide sound evidence of ability.

The unit-based structure supports flexible delivery. A unit is typically 40 hours of timetabled learning.

Who does this qualification suit

The SQA Advanced Certificate and Diploma are suitable for a wide range of learners including:

  • school leavers
  • adult returners to education
  • learners in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects

Access

As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre. Examples of formal entry qualifications include:

  • one Higher from Physics, Technological Studies, Mathematics or Mechatronics, and at least three National 5 passes, which must include Mathematics, Physics or Technological Studies and English
  • a National Certificate Group Award in Engineering, Electronics or Electrical Engineering

Equivalent qualifications or suitable experience may also be accepted for entry.

Progression

Learners who achieve the SQA Advanced Certificate or SQA Advanced Diploma in Mechatronics may gain employment in manufacturing, service and public sector organisations at mechatronic technician and incorporated engineer level.

The SQA Advanced Diploma in Mechatronics may allow direct entry to the third year of a degree course, but more typically to the first or second year. Learners should contact the relevant university for more information. For further information please refer to SQA’s progression partners.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology is expected to approve the SQA Advanced Certificate in Mechatronics as partially satisfying the underpinning educational requirement for Incorporated Engineer registration.

Offer this qualification

Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.
