SQA Advanced Certificate in Poultry Production

The SQA Advanced Certificate in Poultry Production provides learners with skills and knowledge that meet the needs of employers. Learners gain an understanding of techniques and technologies used in poultry production. They also develop knowledge of the scientific and business principles that underpin the poultry industry, and of the environmental context in which the industry operates.

This qualification is available through a growing number of colleges and universities around the world. Typically, an SQA Advanced Certificate takes one year to complete.

Why deliver this qualification

SQA Advanced Certificates have been developed by SQA in partnership with colleges, universities and industry — so employers recognise that they provide sound evidence of ability.

The unit-based structure supports flexible delivery. A unit is typically 40 hours of timetabled learning.

This SQA Advanced Certificate provides progression routes to further study (see Progression).

Who does this qualification suit

The SQA Advanced Certificate in Poultry Production is suitable for a wide range of learners including:

  • school leavers
  • adult returners to education
  • learners in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects


As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre. Examples of formal entry qualifications include:

  • five National 5 passes (or equivalent) at SCQF level 5, including evidence of Numeracy and Communication Skills at SCQF level 4
  • two Higher passes (SCQF level 6) or one A Level pass (SCQF level 7)

Passes in appropriate SQA National Units will be accepted for entry to the programme.

Learners with suitable relevant work-based learning and experience but no relevant formal qualifications, may also be considered for entry.


Learners who achieve an SQA Advanced Certificate in Poultry Production can gain employment in: production units, hatchery units, poultry processing, feed manufacture, inspection services, technical support, or quality assurance.

Learners could progress to the second year of a degree programme, such as Agriculture. They should check entry requirements with the appropriate college/university admissions departments.

Offer this qualification

Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.

Centres without devolved authority must come forward for approval and should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.

Each unit specification gives detailed information on the evidence requirements and approaches to assessment for the unit.
