New qualification for Scotland's museums

Ellen Pryde achieved her SVQ in Museums Galleries Pratice whilst on placement at the Scottish Crannog Centre, Aberfeldy

A qualification which is the first of its kind in Scotland is helping people embark upon a career in the country’s museums and galleries sector.

Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS), Sector Skills Council “Creative and Cultural Skills” and the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) worked in partnership to develop a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) Level 3 in Museums and Galleries Practice.

Undertaking the SVQ is a key aspect of MGS’s Skills for Success vocational training programme. The programme has given paid, work-based experience to non-graduates in museums across Scotland.

Recruited with the help of organisations including Capability Scotland and LGBT Youth Scotland, the participants have shown that diversifying the workforce can benefit the sector.

Ellen Pryde, who joined the programme as an Engagement Trainee at the Scottish Crannog Centre in Aberfeldy, says that she has brought a different perspective to the job and that gaining the SVQ is a great foundation on which to build her career, adding:

I have a qualification now to back that up and I can tell people I have it to show all the work I’ve done over the past year.”

Markus Offer, Skills for Success Programme Manager, agrees that the SVQ is a valuable aspect of the programme:

For the learners, having a year’s work experience in a museum or gallery alongside an SQA qualification will benefit them greatly in the future. In becoming an SQA assessment centre, Museums Galleries Scotland is now pleased to be able to deliver appropriate qualifications using our own assessors and verifiers which allows us to grow and develop our skills offering in Scotland. We are very grateful for the support received from SQA which has allowed us to achieve this.”

Theresa McGowan, SQA Regional Manager, says that by providing meaningful employment opportunities, the programme is helping to address a skills shortage in the museums and galleries sector:

“The innovative Skills for Success programme is giving talented people the chance to embark upon a career in a sector which welcomes their fresh ideas and enthusiasm. In being able to gain an industry recognised qualification alongside valuable work experience, students like Ellen who complete the Skills for Success programme have a bright future ahead of them in Scotland’s museums and galleries.”
