Glasgow teenagers get taste of working life

29 October 2019

Five Glasgow school pupils spent a morning with SQA’s Customer Contact Centre team, thanks to MCR Pathway’s Talent Taster programme.

Talent Tasters give young people the chance to try out a job in bite-sized sessions. It might be a role they want to learn more about, or even one they hadn’t considered before.

If a pupil is inspired by a job and decides it could be for them, then they are guided on what qualifications they need to get there.

The pupils who joined SQA for the morning were from schools across the city – Hillhead High School, St Mungo’s Academy, Rosshall Academy and St. Andrew’s RC Secondary school.

Jamie, a pupil from St Mungo’s Academy, said he found the session really interesting, adding: “I liked the SQA Admin Talent Taster because I got to sign up to MySQA. I enjoyed working with one of the guys and listening into their phone calls. I learned that this job is really busy with phone calls and emails. I want to take on admin but I also want to do customer service.”

Claire O'Hara, Creative and Talent Taster Development Manager at MCR Pathways, said: “We are delighted to be working with SQA to provide Talent Tasters for young people interested in administrative and customer-focused roles. The young people got to experience a real flavour of what working in a fast-paced office environment is like. We are grateful to SQA and all of our partners who offer Taster sessions to young people that may not otherwise get these experiences. It has been a pleasure working together to build new and inspiring opportunities for our young people."

Gill Stewart, Director of Qualifications Development at SQA, welcomed the young people to SQA’s Glasgow office. She said: “We really enjoyed hosting our first ever group of Talent Tasters. The programme is a fantastic way to get pupils excited about the world of work. It can be a young person’s first step on a pathway to an exciting career, and having a goal can make all the difference when they return to their studies at school. We are delighted to add Talent Tasters to the many other ways we work in partnership with MCR Pathways.”
