National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Music Technology: provision of media files
We have published coursework assessment task documents and associated media files for session 2020-21 for National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Music Technology. The coursework assessment task documents are available from the coursework banner on the subject pages:
The media files are available from our secure site and can be accessed through your SQA co-ordinator.
Higher and Advanced Higher
As detailed in the National Course modification summary document for Music Technology which we published at the beginning of October, audio capture will not be assessed in the Higher and Advanced Higher Music Technology assignment and project in session 2020-21.
If centres have the resources and facilities, candidates can capture their own audio. However, marks will not be awarded for this.
Candidates must still plan their assignments and projects. Candidate planning should detail the source of their media files (ie whether SQA, or their own). Their plans do not need to include details of how audio was captured or microphone placement.
For National 5, centres can use the revised assessment task with candidates to generate evidence to demonstrate their attainment for the assignment component, which is worth 70% of the course. Due to the current concerns about sharing and cleaning equipment (eg microphones), there is no requirement for candidates to plan or capture their own audio.
As with Higher and Advanced Higher, if centres have the resources and facilities, candidates can capture their own audio. However, their plans do not need to include details of how audio was captured or microphone placement.
Files available from the SQA secure site
For each level, an overview document details the range of files available.
The multi-tracks are packaged for each level in a separate named folder. Each folder contains:
- a track sheet
- individual .wav files
- individual .mid files (for Advanced Higher)
The track sheets for each package of files provide details of the microphone(s), type(s) of microphone and polar pattern(s), placements, and any additional information.
Candidates, in conjunction with their teacher or lecturer, should select the package of files to use in their project. Once the selection is made, teachers and lecturers should share the folder with the candidate.
Foley, sound design for computing gaming, and audiobooks
Due to copyright restrictions, Foley, sound design for computer gaming contexts, and audiobooks have not been provided, although candidates may still work on assignments in these contexts. Please note that, if candidates choose to do this, audio capture - and the planning of audio capture - will not be marked. If a candidate decides to submit a Foley, sound design for computing gaming, or audiobook assignment or project, their plan should state the source of their media files.
The marking instructions for the assignments and projects are contained in the coursework assessment task documents for session 2020-21. The marking instructions contained in the course specification documents are not applicable for session 2020-21.
Existing coursework assessment task documents
The coursework assessment task documents for use in previous sessions have been made available on our secure site. Centres may want to refer to these documents if they are planning to deliver Music Technology in the future.
