Learning for Sustainability
Learning for Sustainability Themed Conversation – Check out our Blog
We held a very successful pilot centre themed conversation in May which focused on Learning for Sustainability (LfS). The session was very well-attended with practitioners from across pilot centres representing eight NextGen: HN qualifications.
We have published a blog on our website summarising the highlights of the session. This outlines the variety of perspectives approaches adopted by SRUC, Edinburgh College, and the Engineering Council to embed LfS within qualifications. Three guest speakers shared their experiences beforea workshop discussion focused on key challenges faced by the implementation of LfS. Additionally, feedback alongside additional support requested by centres were discussed. You can read the full blog on our website.
“The presenters were excellent, and the discussion break out rooms were very informative” - Pilot centre participant.
There is still an opportunity to give us feedback on the day. You can contact your NPDM who will be happy to help, or Donna Clark directly at lfs@sqa.org.uk.
LfS Resources to Support Pilot Centres
We listened to the feedback from the NextGen: HN pilot centres and have developed two new resources to support learners, and practitioners, on their LfS journey.
SQA NextGen: HN - LfS Webpage
You can visit our new LfS webpage on the NextGen: HN homepage. This resource provides an overview of LfS and explores its importance within NextGen: HN qualifications. It explains how we are preparing learners to deal with the unpredictable social, economic, and environmental challenges facing our rapidly changing world.
The Scottish Government has recently launched 'Target 2030: A movement for people, planet and prosperity, Scotland’s Learning for Sustainability Action Plan 2023-2030', which has been used for definition and guidance. The action plan provides clear evidence regarding a strong learner voice which highlights that young people want LfS to be part of everyday learning.
We have highlighted the underpinning role of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Scottish Government National Performance Framework on the webpage, supporting our expectation that all NextGen: HN learners will exit their studies with:
-
a general understanding of sustainability
-
a good grounding in subject-specific sustainability, and
-
the confidence to apply the knowledge, skills, and values developed through their learning in the next stage of their lives.
We are preparing learners for the increasing demand for green skills, jobs, and careers, as Scotland transitions to a net-zero economy. You can access the full range of LfS resources available on our website.
SQA LfS Academy Module
We are developing a series of modules to support learners and practitioners in developing their understanding of Learning for Sustainability. Module 1 was launched this month and provides learners and practitioners with an introduction to LfS. The module will provide a basic understanding of key social, economic, and environmental challenges alongside the role of the UN SDGs and the Scottish Governments approach to LfS.
Modules 2, 3 and 4 will be launched during the 2023-24 academic year. These modules will provide learners with more information on developing LfS skills, while providing practitioners with more information on embedding LfS into learning, teaching and assessment.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on these resources - let us know through your NPDM or directly by contacting lfs@sqa.org.uk.
