Scottish Learning Festival - Curriculum for Excellence

PHOTO: SQA at the Scottish Learning Festival

The theme of this year's Scottish Learning Festival was Curriculum for Excellence. At our exhibition stand we were able to meet with teaching professionals and discuss our latest news, products and services. We also ran a number of seminars on some of the key issues being debated.

SQA warmly welcomes the announcement of the new National 4 and National 5 qualifications and looks forward to developing the new qualifications in partnership with the teaching profession, Scottish Government, and national and local partners.

The new qualifications will offer increased flexibility, provide more time for learning, more focus on skills and applying learning, and more scope for personalisation. They will meet the needs of all learners as they progress from their broad, general education through the qualifications framework to other learning and to employment.

As with any new qualification, we are ensuring that our partners and the teaching profession are fully involved in the qualifications design teams, working groups and review groups that will help develop National 4 and National 5. We also intend to keep all stakeholders informed and involved
in the development through the use of web-based communication and discussion tools.

You can find the latest information about National 4 and National 5 qualifications on our Curriculum for Excellence web pages: www.sqa.org.uk/curriculumforexcellence

Assessment for Curriculum for Excellence

LOGO: Curriculum for Excellence logo

Earlier this week at the Scottish Learning Festival, the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, Fiona Hyslop MSP, announced the publication of the Scottish Government's Strategic Vision and Principles for Assessment, a key strand of work in implementing Curriculum for Excellence.

The document sets out the Scottish Government's strategy on how to build on the existing strong foundations of effective approaches to assessment.  The main differences from the existing assessment arrangements are that:

Frequently asked questions have also been produced.

Later this year, the Scottish Government will publish a Framework for Assessment as part of the Building the Curriculum series which will provide guidance and support to ensure that arrangements for assessment, at all levels of the educational community, support the values, purposes and principles of Curriculum for Excellence and build on the Assessment is for Learning programme.  The Scottish Survey of Achievement will also be redesigned to provide more information about young people's literacy and numeracy skills.

HN Challenge Campaign Launch

IMAGE: HN Challenge poster
Our campaign, in partnership with Scotland's Colleges, to promote HN Qualifications to potential candidates and raise awareness amongst employers will start shortly.

The campaign uses the strapline 'Qualifications for the real world' and can be broken down into three distinct strands of activity:

16-24 year olds

We have joined forces with Bauer Radio Events to launch an exciting new music quiz across Scotland - the HN Challenge.

This innovative initiative is designed to engage with young potential candidates, to raise awareness and credibility of HNs and to encourage them to contact their local college.

Over 25s

This group of potential candidates will be targeted through press, online and outdoor advertising.

Along with popular news titles, we have an online presence with ScotCareersS1 Learning and S1 Jobs and have also secured almost 150 'Street Talk' outdoor poster sites in close proximity to JobCentres.

Employers

Employer targeting is covered through trade press, newspaper business sections and online.

Trade press includes a mix of ads and editorial in business and newspaper titles. We have animated online presence with LinkedinScotsman (including business e-mail) and The Herald.

To support the campaign we are developing a microsite - hninfo.org.uk - which will include a link to all of Scotland's Colleges and other relevant sites. This microsite will be going live shortly.

Earlier this month, the WorldSkills 2009 Competition took place in Calgary, Canada, attended by 850 competitors from 47 countries, including WorldSkills Team UK. The competitions were witnessed by around 150,000 spectators from around the world.

There were 45 skill competitions within six major categories:

We are delighted to report that Scotland achieved 2 Gold, 1 Bronze and a Medallion of Excellence out of a UK total of 3 Gold, 6 Bronze and 14 Medallions of Excellence.

This is the highest medal tally of any previous Scottish team at Team UK at WorldSkills and played a considerable role in the overall UK tally.  In fact the average team score for the four Scottish competitors was 530 which would have put them first in the World above South Korea (524), Switzerland (520), Ireland (519) and Brazil (519).

The winners from Scotland were:

In addition Mark Nevin achieved Best of Nation for achieving the overall best score of any of the 26 UK team competitors and was 20th overall in the whole competition (from 850 competitors).  He was also in the top 20th overall from all 850 competitors.

LOGO: World Skills Calgary 2009 logoIn order to recognise their outstanding success they along with their employers, training providers, training managers and families have been invited to this years WorldSkills UK Scottish Awards Ceremony on Tuesday 3 November from 10 am - 12.30.  The event will be again held at Perth Concert Hall and the invited special guest will be Liz McColgan MBE.  Awards will be given to competitors in WorldSkills UK and related competitions.

PHOTO: Launch of the Show Racism the Red Card Creative Competition, Craig Brown, ex-Scotland Head Coach, Sylvie Clarke from Banchory Academy, the 2008 competition winner and Jim Duffy, Manager of Brechin City and BBC punditShow Racism the Red Card, the UK's premier anti-racist charity which uses professional footballers as anti-racism models, launched its 2010 creative competition at the Scottish Learning Festival yesterday.

Jim Duffy, Brechin City Manager and Show Racism the Red Card Ambassador hosted the event with Craig Brown, former Scotland Head Coach officially launching the creative competition.

Supported by SQA, together with Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) and the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), the Show Racism the Red Card competition is open to all children and young people from P1 to S6. This year is the first time that students from special schools and further education colleges will also be able to enter.

Billy Singh, campaign manager for Show Racism the Red Card, says: 'After a break in 2009 to run an evaluation on the project, our annual competition is back and bigger than ever for 2010, with new categories for further education colleges and special schools. There is a wealth of creative talent out there and we want to use it to show that Scotland is a fair and inclusive society.'

The entrants' creative work, which does not need to have a football focus, should reflect why racism has no place in Scotland. Creative work could include artwork, poetry, short story / creative writing, music composition, multimedia presentation, dance / drama, research project or T-shirt design.

Dr Janet Brown, SQA Chief Executive says, 'SQA is committed to supporting the Show Racism the Red Card campaign, helping to get the message to our learners that racism has no place in Scotland. The creative competition is an engaging way to encourage young people to think and act in a fair and inclusive way. I wish them all good luck with their competition entries.'

For further information on the competition and to register interest, please visit www.sqa.org.uk/redcard and fill in the online registration form by November 27. Closing date for entries is January 29, 2010.

STF Conference - Creating New Futures

PHOTO: STF Awards winners with Dr Janet Brown, SQA Chief Executive and Mr Stuart Leitch, Chair of STF

We were delighted to sponsor the 2009 Scottish Training Federation 'Creating New Futures' Conference and Awards earlier this month.

The importance of training providers cannot be underestimated, especially in these difficult economic times.  Training providers are essential to the delivery of skills and qualifications to Scotland's workforce.

The inaugural STF awards ceremony recognised and celebrated training provider achievements in four categories that lie at the heart of excellence in the delivery of skills and qualifications:

LOGO: Scottish Training Federation logoSQA Chief Executive, Dr Janet Brown said, 'There was a strong field for the awards and the judges had a hard job in choosing from a first class range of nominations. I would therefore like to congratulate nominees, finalists and winners for your outstanding contribution to training in Scotland.'

Addressing the Bard

PHOTO: Dr Robyn Marsack, Director SPL, Graham Houston, SQA Chairman with poets
Together with the Scottish Poetry Library, we recently launched a unique new Burns anthology, Addressing the Bard, at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

The anthology of 12 new pieces of writing by contemporary poets, and writers, including Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, Nobel prize winner Seamus Heaney and Scottish favourite Liz Lochhead, will show how the work of Burns influences their thinking and creativity.

The anthology has been edited by Douglas Gifford, Emeritus Professor of Scottish Literature at the University of Glasgow.

Writing in Gaelic, Scots and English, the poets also offer illuminating comment on Burns's poems and how they chose to address the Bard. This approach will deliver this poetry to readers in fresh and lively ways, and enable them to grasp that living poets have a dialogue with their predecessors and also with their readers. It will also illustrate the relevance of Burns to contemporary Scotland.

We have distributed this new anthology free in class sets to secondary schools, colleges and prisons throughout Scotland. Supporting teaching resources will be provided by Learning and Teaching Scotland on their website.

SQA Chairman Mr Graham Houston said, 'SQA is delighted to have worked in partnership with the Scottish Poetry Library to support Addressing the Bard, as part of our Homecoming Scotland celebrations. We hope that teachers, lecturers and learners of all ages will enjoy reading it and be able to use it to enhance learning and understanding of the works of our national bard.'

Scottish Poetry Library Director, Dr Robyn Marsack said, 'The poets take Burns's poems as their starting point and move outwards to our tumultuous present circumstance and the everlasting concerns of affection, loss, democracy, and language. From an elegy to an otter and a serious look at the credit crunch to a celebration of female friendship and a swingeing satire on current politics, these poems brilliantly address themes local and universal.'

Scottish sofware company to give teachers e-asy access to assessment tools

Intrallect, a Linlithgow-based software design company, has won the contract to develop Scotland's National Assessment Resource, Minister for Schools and Skills Keith Brown MSP, recently announced.

Currently Learning and Teaching Scotland and SQA operate a number of manual and online assessment systems, to allow teachers to judge the knowledge and understanding of young learners.

The National Assessment Resource will provide the education profession with a single online assessment system. It will act as a store of assessment resources, a tool for the development of new resources, and a coherent infrastructure for assessment within Curriculum for Excellence.

Mr Brown said: 'Good assessment is integral to the rich educational experience we want for all our children and young people; ensuring parents, pupils and teachers get the feedback they need to make the right choices about learning. That is why we are working to develop a coherent system of assessment which values the learning and skills every young person will need in the modern world. The National Assessment Resource is an important part of the infrastructure to support Curriculum for Excellence. By ensuring the values, purposes and principles of Curriculum for Excellence are embedded in our assessment framework we can help children to achieve their potential.'

SQA Chief Executive Dr Janet Brown said, 'This is an exciting development in the delivery of Curriculum for Excellence, which SQA welcomes. The National Assessment Resource is a great example of partnership working between SQA and LTS. This unique system will deliver real benefits to the way teachers and lecturers delivering Curriculum for Excellence use, create and store assessment materials.'

e-portfolio pioneers

LOGO: Learning Assistant logoEarlier in the year, Learning Assistant, a user-friendly e-portfolio and e-assessment solution for training centres delivering Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs), which SQA has endorsed, ran a competition asking assessors using the technology to nominate the learner they felt had benefitted most from the use of the e-portfolio.

The response was tremendous. Two of the winning pioneers from Scottish colleges were a student at Angus College doing Business and Administration at SVQ Level 2 and a student from Shetland College doing Childcare Learning and Development at SVQ Level 2.

When candidates complete a Higher National Certificate in Fitness and Exercise they will receive entry to REPs Level 2.  When candidates complete a National Progression Award in Fitness they will receive entry to REPs level 1. The existing Scottish Vocational Qualification level 2 in Instructing Exercise and Fitness gives entry to REPs level 2.

SQA Qualifications Manager, Paul Gallacher, said that 'This process will enable the sport industry to give recognition to our candidates wherever they choose to work in Scotland, the UK and Europe.  It certainly shows the quality of these SQA Fitness awards while giving SQA a competitive edge.'

The Register is a system of self-regulation for all instructors, coaches, trainers and teachers involved in the exercise and fitness industry. The Register creates a framework within which individual instructors can achieve the highest standards of professionalism, linked to best practice in the exercise and fitness industry. More Choices, More Chances

IMAGE: More Choices, More ChancesRecently we have been working alongside a range of learning providers to produce case studies highlighting activities being undertaken in the context of More Choices, More Chances. All the case studies are based around the assessment and flexible delivery of SQA qualifications covering a broad range of learning and vocational areas. To help  demonstrate partnership approaches not all of the learning providers are SQA centres, those who are not are working in partnership with schools, colleges, training providers or voluntary sector organisations. You can find all the case studies on the More Choices, More Chances webpages with more being developed over the coming months.

Alongside this work we have also undertaken work to identify a number of qualifications that can be used to support and complement the broad range of programmes designed to increase learner choice and opportunity. This will help signpost centres to existing qualifications. It is also anticipated that the qualifications identified will help to increase the range of choice and opportunity available to young people through the delivery of 16+ Learning Choices. We will continue to add qualifications to the list but in the meantime you can find the current list on the More Choices, More Chances webpages.

When you visit the More Choices, More Chances webpages you will also notice a link to the newly launched employability Awards at SCQF Level 3 and 4 which are designed to prepare candidates to enter the world of work.

British Nutrition Foundation conference

PHOTO: British Nutrition Foundation Conference, EdinburghOur Hospitality Qualifications Development Team recently attended the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) conference at Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh.

These annual conferences are an opportunity for teachers to learn about our work and that of the BNFFood Standards Agency and Learning and Teaching Scotland. The conference was attended by more than 300 teachers, mainly secondary Home Economics teachers but also some from primary schools, Universities and Colleges.

The patron of the BNF is Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, KG GCVO, and she took time out from her stay in Scotland to make the opening address to the delegates.  HRH Princess Royal talked about the need to educate youngsters, both in theory and in practice and about food - start when young and give them the knowledge needed to make informed choices regarding their diet.

According to Stephanie Valentine, Deputy Director General of the British Nutrition Foundation, 'There is some really terrific work going on in Home Economics lessons around Scotland.  We don't hear nearly enough about it!  These conferences provide a professional update for teachers dedicated enough to give up their time.  Teachers are a vital resource, but I feel confident that they will leave refreshed and inspired to make sure that all their teaching reflects current, accurate nutrition information.'

The BNF was established over 40 years ago and has developed a reputation for delivering objective, evidence-based information on food and nutrition in the context of health and lifestyle.
