QCF_Jewellery Manufacturing CAD/CAM

The QCF Level 3 Diploma in Jewellery Manufacturing CAD/CAM has been developed in response to the needs of industry in order to produce skilled creative designers who also understand all stages of the jewellery manufacturing production process.  

The Qualification is aimed at learners who already have basic skills and knowledge in jewellery making and design drawing.who may wish to work in the jewellery manufacturing industry as a designer, or trade specialist in CAD (computer-aided design) and/or CAM (computer-aided manufacture).

The Qualification covers areas such as producing precious metal objects from detailed drawings and specifications; marking out and measuring materials for the manufacture of precious metal objects; producing jewellery components using wax casting;

producing CAD designs for precious metal objects; producing CAM prototypes for precious metal objects. Learners will also be able to take a range of optional Units such as: forming complex jewellery or silverware components; applying concepts of metallurgy to the production process; producing rubber moulds for lost wax casting and using mechanical methods to join precious metal objects.

Achievement of the Qualification  will provide learners with a high level understanding and proficiency in all stages of the jewellery manufacturing process, including casting-based jewellery manufacture, technical drawing skills and CAD design. On successful completion, the learner will  also have the ability towork independently, with confidence and consistency.

This qualification is designed to be assessed in the workplace, or in conditions of the workplace and is available through approved SQA centres.

Who does this qualification suit

The QCF Level 3 Diploma in Jewellery Manufacturing CAD/CAM is suitable for a wide range of candidates including:

  • learners progressing from the QCF Level 2 Diploma in Jewellery Manufacturing
  • individuals who already have basic skills and knowledge in jewellery making and design drawing
  • adult returners to education
  • people in employment who wish to enhance/widen their career prospects by gaining a recognised qualification
  • individuals who wish to start their own business

Apprenticeships

This Qualification is a mandatory component in the Level 3 Jewellery Apprenticeship. 

Access

As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre.

Progression

Learners who successfully achieve theLevel 3 Jewellery Manufacturing CAD/CAM Qualification  canprogress to:

  • a wide range of Level 4 qualifications including the following jewellery-specific qualifications:
    • Level 4 Diploma in Jewellery Manufacturing CAD/CAM
    • Level 4 Diploma in Jewellery Allied Trades
    • Level 4 Diploma in Jewellery and Silverware Manufacturing
  • Employment in a range of job roles including: Manufacturing Jeweller, Mounter, Diamond Mounter, Modelmaker, Caster, CAD Technician/Designer.

Approval

Centres will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.

Ongoing course assessment will apply. Each Unit specification gives detailed information on the Evidence Requirements and approaches to assessment for the Unit.

Qualification Structure

The QCF Level 3 Diploma in Jewellery Manufacturing CAD/CAM requires learners to achieve a minimum of 81 credits in total;  54 credits from the five Mandatory Units plus at least 27 credits from the Optional units.
