Engineering Science - updated assessment materials
We’ve made changes to our coursework documentation for National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher.
National 5 and Higher
Starting in session 2024-25, the assignment in both National 5 and Higher will be marked using Marking from Image (MFI). This is the same marking approach we use with our question papers, and it allows for front-end quality assurance and live monitoring of marking. This ensures the most accurate marking possible.
To support this move to MFI, we’ve made substantial changes to the assignment documents for session 2024-25, which are due to be published in January 2025. We’re still asking candidates to demonstrate the same skills – from their perspective, there is little difference – but we need the submission to be in a specific format to support MFI.
We’ve already updated the specimen assignment coursework assessment task documents to support teachers, lecturers, and candidates with this change. These are available on our National 5 Engineering Science web page and Higher Engineering Science web page (under ‘Coursework’).
Advanced Higher
Following the first year of implementation of the NQ Advanced Higher project, we’ve made minor alterations to the project coursework assessment task document. These are minor clarifications, including removal of the word ‘detailed’ from the term ‘detailed project plan’ throughout the document. We define 'detail' in the marks breakdown in the marking instruction.
Please ensure you and your candidates use the new version of the document which is dated September 2024 and is valid from session 2024-25 until further notice. The document is available on our Advanced Higher Engineering Science web page (under ‘Coursework’).
We’ll also be holding a webinar on Tuesday 1 October 2024 which will focus exclusively on the Advanced Higher project. More information on the webinar, and a link to our event booking system, is available at www.understandingstandards.org.uk/Webinars.
