The SfW Course in Sports and Recreation appeals to a wide variety of potential candidates. It places emphasis on experiential learning and offers skills and knowledge in a broad vocational area.
It can be delivered at a school over the academic year or through a college on a shorter programme — however, it does not have to be tied in to follow the academic session.
Delivery must be in partnership with industry and it is important for centres to manage the Course in an integrated manner that reflects the day-to-day issues of a realistic sport and recreation environment.
The Course is aimed at school candidates and adult returners. I
t teaches transferable skills which can open the way to a variety of courses, including the possibility of continued study. It gives an understanding of the workplace and enhances skills and attitudes for employability.
Entry is at the discretion of the centre. For the level 5 Course, it would be beneficial for candidates to have attained Sport and Recreation at SCQF level 4 or any of its Units (or equivalent).
Successful level 4 candidates can expect to progress to the level 5 Award or to other National Courses at level 5; Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) in Sport and Recreation; further education; training; and employment.
Successful attainment of level 5 may provide progression to National Courses at SCQF level 6; Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) in Sport and Recreation; further education; training; and employment.
Centres with devolved authority are eligible to seek approval through their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact the Business Development Team for guidance in completing the combined CA1/SA1 form.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence.
Assessment is designed so that information can be gathered holistically where possible. Each Unit is supported by a National Assessment Bank (NAB) item which provides an assessment package and exemplifies the national standard. NABs are available to download from SQA’s secure website.
Some employability skills are assessed as part of the essential evidence required for particular Units. However, there are other employability skills which are developed and encouraged but not formally assessed. Centres may wish to have regular reviews of the development of these skills with candidates. This could be done along with the formal review process required in some of the Units, for example the Sport and Recreation: Assist with a Component of Activity Sessions Unit at SCQF level 5.

It is important that centres place candidates in a suitable learning environment (a real or simulated workplace environment) since access to specific equipment and qualified staff is essential. Securing appropriate facilities/venues needs to be given careful consideration and planning so that all resources and facilities are in place prior to entering candidates for the Course. Through practical experiences in these settings, candidates will enhance their employability in a very competitive environment.
