PDA Practice Learning at SCQF levels 7, 9, 10

The Professional Development Awards (PDA) in Practice Learning at SCQF levels 7, 9 and 10 offers candidates the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills that they will need to support or contribute to learning within the wider social services workforce and related professions.

The PDA in Practice Learning at SCQF level 10 covers areas such as supporting learning in a social services context, assessment of learners, leadership for learning, establishing effective working relationships, creating an environment for learning, supervising and facilitating learning, and evidence-based practice in social services.

The qualification is ideally suited to those who work in the field of social work, social care or allied professions. They will be able to offer constructive learner support and guidance through their contributions to the development and evaluation of learning opportunities and environments.

The qualification is available through colleges and training providers.

Why deliver this qualification

The PDA in Practice Learning at SCQF level 7 will be of particular value to candidates who are supporting learners new to the practice setting by sharing reflective practice and by being shadowed by the learner.

The PDA in Practice Learning at SCQF level 9 will be of particular value to candidates who are supporting learners by mentoring, supervising practice and giving feedback.

The PDA in Practice Learning (Social Services) at SCQF level 10 will be of particular value to candidates who deliver learning programmes, assess learning, apply models of supervision, are involved in quality assuring learning and development, and are involved in post-registration training and learning.

Who does this qualification suit

The PDA in Practice Learning (Social Services) is suitable for candidates who would normally be in a situation where they expect to support or contribute to learning within the wider social services workforce and related professions.

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the centre.

Candidates for the PDA in Practice Learning at SCQF level 7 should have effective communication and interpersonal skills. This may be demonstrated by relevant professional qualifications at SCQF level 6 (or equivalent) or above with relevant experience in a relevant setting.

Candidates for the PDA in Practice Learning at SCQF level 9 should have well developed communication and interpersonal skills and be able to demonstrate the ability to think analytically and systematically. This may be demonstrated by relevant professional qualifications at SCQF level 8 (or equivalent) or above with relevant experience in a social services or other relevant setting.

Candidates for the PDA in Practice Learning (Social Services) at SCQF level 10 should have well developed communication and interpersonal skills and be able to demonstrate their ability to critically review and consolidate knowledge, skills, practices and thinking in their disciplines. This may be demonstrated by relevant professional qualifications at SCQF level 9 (or equivalent) or above with relevant experience in a social services or other relevant setting.

All candidates should be able to provide evidence of their experience in the supporting of learning, eg buddying, supervising, mentoring, training, or teaching.

Different combinations of relevant National Qualifications, vocational qualifications and equivalent qualifications from other awarding bodies may also be acceptable.

Progression

Due to the SCQF level of this award there is no articulation/progression opportunities within Practice Learning.

Candidates who successfully complete the PDA in Practice Learning at SCQF level 7 may be able to progress to the PDA in Practice Learning (Social Services) at SCQF level 9 or the PDA in Practice Learning at SCQF level 9 if they can provide evidence of their ability to practice and communicate at SCQF level 8 at the point of entry. This may be evidenced in a range of ways including personal statements and evidence of practice supported by employer.

Candidates who have successfully completed the PDA in Practice Learning at SCQF level 9 may be able to progress to the PDA in Practice Learning (Social Services) at SCQF level 10 or the PDA in Practice Learning at SCQF level 10.

Approval

Centres will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.

How to assess

Each individual Unit specification gives detailed information on the Evidence Requirements and approaches to assessment for each Unit.

Ongoing course assessment will apply.

Lapsing

This group award has been replaced and has entered into its lapsing period.

The finishing date for this qualification is 31/03/2018.

Centres should note that when a group award is entered into its lapsing period, the following will apply:

  • the group award will be deleted from the relevant catalogue
  • the group award arrangements document will remain until the qualification reaches its finish date at which point it will be removed from the SQA website and archived
  • no new centres may be approved to offer the group award
  • centres should only enter candidates whom they expect to complete the group award during the defined lapsing period of 3 years
