SVQ 2 and SVQ 3 Land-based Engineering (Ground Care) at SCQF levels 5 and 6

SVQ 2 and SVQ 3 Land-based Engineering (Ground Care) at SCQF levels 5 and 6

Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) allow learners to demonstrate competence in job-related skills in their particular area of work and expertise.

The SVQ 2 Land-based Engineering (Ground Care) at SCQF level 5 covers core land-based engineering topics such as: mechanical principles; tools and equipment; material preparation, shaping and assembly; servicing and maintenance; thermal joining processes; cooling and lubrication; and servicing and repair of electrical systems on land-based equipment. It also covers monitoring and maintaining health, safety and security; and establishing and maintaining working relationships with others.

The SVQ 3 Land-based Engineering (Ground Care) at SCQF level 6 covers how to manage and improve own performance in a business environment; how to recognise and reduce hazards in the land-based engineering work area; and customer care in land-based engineering. It also includes core land-based engineering topics such as: servicing and repair of engines on land-based equipment; servicing and repair of hydraulic systems and components on land-based equipment; and inspection and testing of land-based equipment.

These qualifications have been developed by Lantra the sector skills council and are intended for people working on the service and repair of agricultural machinery.

These qualifications are available through colleges, employers and training providers.

The SVQs in Land-based Engineering (Ground Care) have now been extended until 31/07/2017.

Why deliver this qualification

SVQs are based on National Occupational Standards. SQA works in partnership with other organisations to ensure that National Occupational Standards (NOS) are relevant to the current and future needs of Scottish industries.

The SVQs in Land-based Engineering (Ground Care) at SCQF levels 5 and 6 are re-accredited qualifications.

Successful learners gain an internationally recognised qualification which guarantees that they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully. Employers will also benefit from their employees being proficient.

Assessment is carried out in the workplace, which minimises any time learners would need to be away from their work.

The SVQ can be offered in any of the following modes:

  • full-time
  • part-time (eg day-release)
  • open and distance learning
