Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver

The Certificate in Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver at QCF level 2 will develop knowledge and skills in areas such as health and safety in the taxi work environment; vehicle maintenance and safety inspections; routes and fares; map reading and route planning; and transporting of children and young people.

This qualification is available through further education centres and private training providers.

Why deliver this qualification

This qualification offers centres flexibility and choice which is valued by learners and centres. As the nature of the taxi and private hire driver sector involves many of the learners providing services around the clock it precludes commitment to regular learning delivery so flexibility of delivery and assessment is essential.

It will provide learners with an understanding of current legislation and good customer service. The qualification will develop and enhance the range of skills and techniques required to deliver high quality services to the travelling public.

Who does this qualification suit

The Certificate in Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver at QCF level 2 is suitable for drivers already employed within the taxi and private hire industry as well as new entrants. 

Access

As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre.  Learners should be employed within the taxi and private hire driver industry (or be prospective employees).

Progression

This qualification provides the underpinning knowledge for the Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Road Passenger Vehicle Driving (Taxi and Private Hire).

Approval

Centres seeking approval to offer this qualification should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.

How to assess

This qualification is assessed by multiple choice tests.  Multiple choice examinations will be hosted on SQA’s SOLAR platform – this is SQA’s e-Assessment service.

In addition there is a practical assessment required within the Unit Taxi and Private Hire Services for Passengers who Require Assistance.  A checklist for this assessment can be found in the page for this qualification on SQA’s secure site.
