The PDA in Outside Broadcasting in a Multi Camera Production at SCQF level 9 is a practical award that will develop the learner's understanding of outside broadcasting through industry-focused training combined with a work placement.

The PDA is a practical award and centres seeking to offer the PDA in Outside Broadcasting in a Multi Camera Production should be aware that practical production is a resource-intensive activity. There must be adequate access to specialist equipment used in outside broadcast such as broadcast cameras, sports lenses, multi-channel and replay hard disk devices, and multi camera studios or outside broadcast trucks.

This qualification is likely to be delivered through colleges working in partnership with employers to ensure suitable work placements for learners.

Why deliver this qualification

The PDA in Outside Broadcasting in a Multi Camera Production at SCQF level 9 has been developed in partnership with employers and industry.

It will help employers meet skills gaps and provide continuing professional development for staff, while learners will gain knowledge and skills needed for progression in the workplace.

It can also be offered to people who are in training and who wish to gain employment in the sector.

The Unit-based structure aids timetable flexibility. Units are typically 40 hours of learning and they can be delivered on a full-time or part-time basis.

Who does this qualification suit

The target audience is those who have completed an HND in Creative Industries: Television or Radio or Communication and Media or other relevant qualifications at this level and are seeking to enhance their skills.

The PDA would also be suitable for freelancers or college staff wishing to upskill.

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the centre.

Learners would benefit from having attained the skills, knowledge and understanding required by one or more of the following qualifications or experience:

  • HND Creative Industries: Television
  • HND Creative Industries: Radio
  • HND Creative Industries: Communication and Media
  • Relevant work experience in the creative industries

Progression

The Units in the PDA have been mapped against the National Occupational Standards developed by Creative Skillset.

Completion of the PDA should enhance learners' job prospects. Job roles that would be relevant include:

  • Outside Broadcast Edit Assistant/Logger
  • Outside Broadcast Camera Assistant
  • Outside Broadcast Sound Assistant
  • Outside Broadcast Production Assistant
  • Outside Broadcast Runner

Alternatively, learners with a relevant HND (see Access section above) together with the PDA would have the opportunity of progressing to the third year of a degree programme, for example, BA in Broadcast Production, BA in Television etc.

Approval

Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.

Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.

How to assess

Each individual Unit specification gives detailed information on the Evidence Requirements and approaches to assessment for each Unit.

Learners will be assessed by gathering and presenting a portfolio of evidence which showcases their knowledge of job roles, working disciplines, technology and risk assessment etc. Learners will then apply what they have learned during the completion of a work placement within an outside broadcast multi camera production.

Group Award code: GJ0W 49 (24 SCQF credit points)

The PDA in Outside Broadcasting in a Multi Camera Production at SCQF level 9 consists of three mandatory Units and two additional Units. 

The additional Units do not contribute to the overall credit required for the Group Award but may be taken to meet a specific need.
