The Diplomas in Thermal Insulation at QCF levels 2 and 3 will provide learners with the knowledge and skills that they will need for employment and/or further study.

The Diploma at QCF level 2 covers areas such as erecting and dismantling access equipment, handling and moving resources in a thermal insulation work context, sheet metal insulation protection, the application of insulation to flat and cylindrical surfaces and working safely and efficiently in a thermal insulation work context.

The Diploma and NVQ Diploma at QCF level 3 will develop knowledge and skills in areas such as confirming work meets quality standards, workplace health, safety and welfare, fabricating and fitting complex sheet metal insulation protection, and removing, replacing and maintaining insulation to flat, cylindrical and complicated surfaces.

These qualifications will develop skills in working with thermal insulation to an advanced level either through the fabrication route or through the application of insulation and finishes to different surfaces. Both routes enable candidates to show that they can develop and maintain good working relationships, meet quality standards and resolve indeterminate situations, while conforming to general workplace health, safety and welfare standards.

These qualifications are jointly awarded, and certificate issued by, SQA and TICA, the Thermal Insulation Contractors Association.

This qualification is available through colleges and training providers.

The Diplomas in Thermal Insulation at QCF levels 2 and 3 have been developed for the growing insulation sector.

On successfully completing the course, learners will gain an internationally recognised qualification that guarantees they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully. Employers will also benefit from their employees being proficient and safe team workers.

The Diplomas at QCF level 2 and 3 can be offered in any of the following modes:

  • full-time
  • part-time (eg day-release)
  • open and distance learning
  • infill into existing classes
  • evening provision

Who does this qualification suit

The Diplomas in Thermal Insulation at QCF levels 2 and 3 are suitable for a wide range of learners, aged over 16, including:

  • adult returners to education
  • people in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects
  • individuals who wish to start their own business

The qualifications may be of interest to those who have previously worked, or are working, in the construction sector.

Apprenticeships

The Level 2 Diploma is a mandatory component in the Intermediate Apprenticeship Framework for Construction Specialists.

The Level 3 Diploma and NVQ Diploma are mandatory components in the Advanced Apprenticeship Framework for Construction Specialists. 

Learners may wish to do these qualifications as part of the Apprenticeship, or on their own.   If learners complete the qualifications as part of the Apprenticeship they will be required to undergo additional training, over and above the core qualification, in areas including employment rights and responsibility and/or English and maths.

They may wish to consider taking ualifications outside of the Apprenticeship framework:

  • to maximise their employment opportunities within this sector, as not all employers offer Apprenticeship places for this particular job role
  • the full Apprenticeship may not be relevant to those who are already in employment but wish to gain recognition and/or certification of their skills
  • if they meet the entry requirements to take the qualification but not those required for the apprenticeship route

Access

As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre.

Progression

Level 2 Diploma in Thermal Insulation

This qualification can enable learners to progress into a role as a Thermal Insulation Installer with responsibilities such as working on industrial sites carrying out thermal insulation to tanks, vessels, pipes and refrigeration units.

It can also provide progression to SQA’s Level 3 Diploma and NVQ Diploma in Thermal Insulation.

Level 3 Diploma and NVQ Diplomas in Thermal Insulation

These qualifications could provide progression to employment in the thermal insulation sector.e.g:

  • as a foreman thermal insulator/supervisor/engineer who may have responsibility for applying complex and routine insulations and various finishes to complex shapes.

This qualification can also provide progression to other qualifications, such as: SQA’s

  • NVQ Level 4 Construction Site Supervision
  • NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Site Management

Approval

Centres will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.

Ongoing course assessment will apply. Each Unit specification gives detailed information on the Evidence Requirements and approaches to assessment for the Unit.

Diploma in Thermal Insulation Level 3

This qualification requires the learner to complete mandatory and optional Units.
