Construction Site Supervision at QCF level 4

The NVQ Diplomas in Construction Site Supervision at QCF level 4 will develop knowledge and skills in areas such as health, safety, welfare and environmental protection; planning work activities and resources to meet work requirements; co-ordinating and organising the control of work; and developing and maintaining good occupational working relationships.

These qualifications also cover allocating and monitoring the use of plant, equipment or machinery; maintaining supplies of materials to meet project requirements; controlling work against agreed standards; and contributing to the control of work quantities and costs.

This Diploma at QCF level 4 can be offered in any of the following modes:

  • full-time
  • part-time (eg day-release)
  • open and distance learning
  • infill into existing classes
  • evening provision

Who does this qualification suit

The Diploma in Construction Site Supervision at QCF level 4 is suitable for a wide range of candidates, aged 18 years and over, including:

  • school leavers
  • adult returners to education
  • people in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects
  • individuals who wish to start their own business

The qualification is suitable for those who work, or have previously worked, in the construction industry, in a supervisory role e.g. supervising the work of others and of the construction site.

Progression

This qualification can provide progression to a range of jobs within the construction industry, including:

  • Site Supervisor
  • Assistant Site Manager

This qualification is included as the competence component within the Higher Apprenticeship in Construction Management.  Candidates may wish to do this qualification as part of the Apprenticeship, or on its own.   If candidates complete this qualification as part of the Apprenticeship they will be required to undergo additional training, over and above the core qualification, in areas including employment rights and responsibility and/or English and maths.

They may wish to consider taking this qualification outside of the Apprenticeship framework:

  • to maximise their employment opportunities within this sector, as not all employers offer Apprenticeship places for this particular job role
  • the full Apprenticeship may not be relevant to those who are already in employment but wish to gain recognition and/or certification of their skills
  • if they meet the entry requirements to take the qualification but not those required for the apprenticeship route

This qualification can also provide progression to SQA’s Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management.  This qualification is for Managers working on construction sites and it provides pathways for those who want to specialise in:

  • Building and Civil Engineering
  • Conservation
  • Demolition
  • Highways and Maintenance Repair
  • Residential Developments

Many construction contractors and clients insist that all workers on site hold a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card to prove competence in their stated occupation and to show that they have relevant health and safety awareness. The CSCS cards for construction workers are based on their job, experience and qualifications, or membership of a professional body.

CSCS cards can be obtained through completion of construction-based apprenticeship frameworks, by applicants providing copies of their fully indentured apprenticeship papers gained through the provider of the apprenticeship programme. www.afo.sscalliance.org/frameworkslibrary

Access

As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre. 

Approval

Centres will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.

Ongoing course assessment will apply. Each Unit specification gives detailed information on the Evidence Requirements and approaches to assessment for the Unit.
